Strength coach Max rants on the new research showing why even if we are not sure of our current goals, we need to be moving our bodies. Now get out there and move!
A new study has just come out from the Institute for Exercise and Environmental Medicine, Presbyterian Hospital, and the University of Texas. In the study they wanted to see the effects of aging on heart function (specifically the Left Ventricular Compliance).
The researchers took a group of young (mid 20’s) sedentary but “healthy” subjects and compared them to both a group of older but “healthy” subjects in their 70’s, and a group of healthy “masters athletes” with an average age of 67.
The results may surprise you (but not me)! The researchers found that the master’s athlete’s heart function was better than their sedentary counterparts. The researchers also found that the sedentary older individuals had a declining heart function compared to the younger group. BUT the researchers found that the Master’s athlete’s heart function was indistinguishable from that of the younger sedentary group! The researchers conclusion; Prolonged, sustained endurance training preserves ventricular compliance with aging and may help to prevent heart failure in the elderly.
Now lets all get out there and move!
