The Meaning of Organic, Part I
Unless you have been living under a rock, one cannot help but notice the bevy of products in the supermarket which now bear the label “organic”. It has become a veritable marketing deluge pouring over the average consumer.
Originally, the FDA and USDA did not proffer any standards for organic goods. Now, at least, they have established certain criteria; yet most folks remain in the dark with regard to official labeling.
Essentially there are three categories supplied from regulating agencies:
1) 100% Organic - the product bearing this is either completely organic or composed of elements which are completely organic
2) Organic - the product is at least 95% organic
3) Made with Organic ingredients - the product is minimally 70% organic
Of course none of these tell you what the guidelines are that the USDA makes requisite for said labeling. Ultimately, one still is left wondering what does organic mean?
Stay tuned for Part II where we will cover that.
