The importance of sportsmanship

First off I would like to say that this is something that is very important to me.  I believe everything starts with attitude.  If you go into something with the right mental attitude, your chances of achieving your personal goals are much greater than if you start a task with a negative attitude. Always show sportsmanship in every competition, from saying good job, to helping someone up, to following rules of the game and keeping it clean. I believe sportsmanship is the key ingredient in the making of a champion.

tommyf_78: Wally I agree with you as well. The thing that Pro athletes tend to forget is that most of the younger athletes look up to them, so the young athletes are going to act the same way as Pro athletes. Now this is not for just football but any sport.
Anyway, I was taught when I was young to have good sportsmanship no matter what and I still live by that to this day!

wally42: Roadhouse, thanks for the input man. I definitely agree with you about being competitive during the contest, however, one should still display good sportsmanship. I don’t want it to come across like I am saying it is a bad thing to be competitive because it’s not. I too played football at the high school, college and semi-pro level. I know what you mean when you say you get caught up in the moment and the intensity takes over. All I am trying to say is you see bad sportsmanship too much these days. Egos often get in the way, and a lot of times in team sports these days you see a lot of athletes more about I and not the team and are very sore losers.

roadhouse327: Wally I agree with you to a certain extent. When ever I was on the field I looked at everyone against my team as the enemy. If I tackled them I would get up and run back to the huddle. If I knocked them over on a block I would continue to run up to the next guy in front of me. However, I left all grudges and results on the field. After the game I would talk to the other linemen and shake their hands, but on the field, if it was a part of the game that got them on the ground, they would have to figure out how to get back up. But for sure, I made sure I was a good sport afterwards and between plays
