Judging Standards

Hello my fellow competitors,
How do you feel about the differences in judging standards in different areas with respect to figure? I compete as an amateur in the Caribbean, and I have also been to the World Championships. I am aspiring to be a pro, so I avidly follow the pro circuit. It is clear to me that there are different ideas among the judges in these different regions as to what the “ideal” figure competitor should look like, because if you line up the top three from a competition in each region, they tend to all look different. It can make competition prep a bit of a crap shoot for me.

Any thoughts?

tammyribs: A journal is a very good idea - I always say I don’t have time for it - I have a very hectic full-time job - but I think it is a very useful tool. Thanks for that!
I don’t have any pics posted at the moment, but I’ll put up some soon.
Thanks for the encouragement, I’ll check out your journal.

tammyribs: I took a break this year because of some personal challenges, but I am raring to go next year! I really missed the stage. Not sure exactly when the first show is, the calendar of events should be out soon, but I think it may be somewhere around May/ June. I’m hoping to earn my pro card!

llulko: That is what competing is all about… It’s a great accomplishment in life!

It’s not all about winner because clearly the judging is off.  It’s about taking your mind and body to another limit and proving yourself that you have the courage and will power to do anything… it is such a high!  When is your next show?

tammyribs: So true - I don’t like to question the judges if I don’t win, because I always feel I should take that as incentive to keep improving, but as you said, when I observe the results in other shows, sometimes I’m flabbergasted. Of course the politics are real too.

So far, though, it hasn’t disillusioned me enough to make me stop competing, I just try to go into it as prepared as I can, and if I feel really good about myself and make the top three, I’m okay!

llulko: This is one of the reasons why i stopped competing… It’s not only based on region… It could be what the judges are looking for the “DAY”… It’s horrible… Sometimes judges are looking for either a softer look, muscular look, or a really lean look…  You can never really predict who the winner is from the start (at least i cant)

I really do believe there are some politics involved to…

I recently went to my friends figure competition and the girl who won first place had no right to be holding that trophy… I guess that is the nature of the game…
