Dietitians share tips and tricks
March is National Nutrition Month, and this year I have interviewed dietitians from around the state and country on their favorite foods. I hope you enjoy reading and learn of a new food you may want to include into your eating regime.
“I am absolutely in love with my morning oatmeal. I mix in a dash of cinnamon, two egg whites for some extra protein and vanilla almond milk for flavor. It’s delicious and keeps me full until lunch!”
— Lindsey D. Toth, Tufts Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, dietetic intern, Boston, Mass.
“I love the ‘bang for your buck’ you get with a fresh grapefruit — a perfect high-volume but low-calorie food! I also love to serve up some good ol’ fashioned beef stew made with lean beef and a ton of veggies.”
- Georgia Kostas, MS, RD, nutritionist, TELOS Fitness Center, Dallas
“A few of my favorite foods both for myself and my players: my own coleslaw recipe with special ingredients to add a spicy flavor, flank steak marinated in a homemade curry sauce, grilled oysters, chocolate whey protein shake made with peanut butter, bananas and lasagna made with lean ground turkey, eggplant and other veggies, and, of course, dark chocolate.”
- Tavis Piatolly, MS, RD, nutritionist for the New Orleans Saints
“I couldn’t survive without nonfat Greek yogurt and nuts. The yogurt is my ideal breakfast because it’s protein-packed, mixes well with all types of cereal and fruit and satisfies my hunger. Nuts may be the perfect snack because they are satisfying and so easy to transport.
— Sandy Sfikas, RD, LDN, Chicago, Ill.
“Cherry tomatoes are one of my favorite foods; I love to slice them in half and lightly sauté them in olive oil with onion and garlic powder (and sometimes fresh chopped onion) and pour them with fresh mozzarella cheese over pasta. Yum!”
— Elisa Zied, MS, RD, CDN, New York, N.Y.
In honor of National Nutrition Month, I am launching a new set of nutrition “how-to” e-course. The first series will begin Monday. Topics include “How To” Eat Cleaner, “How To” Lose Weight for Good and “How To” Travel, Dine Out and Look Great. Go to foodtherapyonline for more information.

I would love to start incorporating grapefruit into my diet. I hear that grapefruit is a great post workout meal. (simple carb)
