“return to our roots-claiming that we evolved without shoes, and that wearing them has
caused changes in our biomechanics and had a detrimental effect to our
health (in this case pertaining to leg injuries).”

it’d be interesting to see some more research behind this….we did evolve without shoes but it seems rediculous not to wear some type of foot support while working out…

well that is the argument they use, is that we evolved without foot SUPPORT and our feet are engineered perfectly for sustaining all the movements necessary over pretty much any terrain. foot PROTECTION on the other hand, is a whole different matter. the new “minimalist” shoes provide pretty much no support and don’t mess with mechanics, but are more their for protection than anything else.

Just like wearing a support belt, wraps, straps. it weakens part of your body that doesn’t have to do the work or less of it. I do see the problem with many people who try to go overboard and go right to running with no shoes who have been wearing shoes since birth. I think it is good to encourage younger athletes to do atleast some training bare foot or minimalist while they can still make an easy transition to less shoe.
