I rarely see any of the real basic movements anymore. I am talking about push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, and …

I believe we are seeing more athletes and the general public doing more of the body lifts. The problem with these lifts is that people think there are limiting factors of progression. Simply throwing on a weight vest, weighted backpack, using some jungle gym straps or trx bands can keep these exercises challenging long after just using your own body weight. Also as you mention time under tension but also rest intervals can make a huge difference. Simple, basic is always great and only limited to your own creativity.

i need to start using more bodyweight exercises. i have been so busy with work lately that i haven’t been able to get into the gym as much, and bodyweight movements are a super easy, convenient way to still get your work in without any equipment, space, and very little time. thanks for the reminder!

how about it…i teach pe and it is incredible how weak children are…and adults…they were going to eliminate the pull ups from the presidents fit challenge because it was too hard for most!!!??? Is that what they do when math problems are to hard? just eliminate it? CRAZY!!! I see my elementary kids once a week and it is pathetic. We are trying to build a foundation for long term health and well being yet instead of concrete and bricks we are using staw and sticks! Sorry about the rant. Every one can use the basics and you can do them anywhere and you can make them as hard as you need to see benefits.

That is so dumb if they get rid of it..

Perfect analogy..

“Is that what they do when math problems are to hard? just eliminate it?”

i think i was able to do more pull ups when I was younger actually!  booooo!

I got my bachlors in PE and health.. to hear this drives me nuts!

And gym class once a week really??? that is not enough activity..

I wish you the best of luck with these kids.. it is such a shame to hear that because kids are more obese then ever..

Keep us posted on this.. instead of homeroom first period, kids/teens should be required to at least walk 1-2 miles in that  15-30 min time period..

That has actually been done in schools…rigorous activity before science and math and students have performed better on standardized test. The stats are for more activity.
We keep increasing the day for our school day yet no more time for arts and physical activities..the two areas that are most responsible for creative thought….20 more min. of math by the same bad math teacher is 20 more minutes of day dreaming and wishing the time would end….that is not a cut on math teachers…that is for bad boring teachers…there are so many ways to integrate activity and instruction in the same class…I have written a few books and spoke at the state level about this type of education for our students. Conection and relativity!! Oh yeah… body weight exercises my best pull upers are usually 2-3rd grade gymnast girls doing 20-22 pull ups. and I am a stickler on form…no half pulls. All the way down and all the way up. It is a great exercise and I have ropes to climb and a climbing wall. We train for the weakness. So they are no longer a weakness.

This blows my mind… they actually were able to extend the day and they give it to extra math classes???

So silly… 22 pull ups?? Insane!!!! That is sooo impressive

We need more people like you to make a change in our country… who knows! Maybe one day it will change…

I agree with you… kids would benefit so much with extra gym and art classes… it helps with creativity, social skills, health ect… i really hope i see a difference in a few year.. Keep at it

What books have you written?  And were do you teach?

k-3 pe in Pennsylvania. The books are related to phys ed. PE Classroom Complexes, 50 Ways to Use Bowling Pins and 100 Ways to use Gym Mats. The last two came from all the activities we did with the complexes. The complexes are a way to incorporate other learning elements( math,writing,etc..) to physical activities and problem solving.

Ya it truly is amazing how weak kids are these days and honestly it is not there fault. So many kids are willing to do the work if they are taught properly. When i took over the strength and conditioning for the track team at the high school i coach at last year. Other coaches were constantly telling me we had weights last year but none of the kids go or want to lift weights. Everyone was like make it easy so they will come. But if anyone knows me i am far from easy when it comes to coaching. I push these kids to places they never thought they could go. Sure i did get some kids that quit but i had 10 times more kids come up to me and say “i have never been pushed before like this and im glad someone finally is because it feels good to work hard”. This year i have more kids than i have equipment for. I have 3 kids to a platform and its optional workouts right now. We have kids doing other sports that said they are coming in as soon as there sport is over. So with the right motivation from the right people we can change these kids lifes. All we have to do is keep believing and not give up on them.

Caring!!! You have to care. When you encourage and make no excuses they will believe and follow. Sometimes it takes longer than others only because the older they have gotten, someone has let them down or told them they couldn’t do something. When they start to see that improvement they build confidence not only in themselves but in you the coach. That trust is what makes a child succeed or help to succeed. I have a running club that started with elementary kids, 8 of them. We chose a 5k run to do and we started training. Rain, shine, snow we went out in all elements and trained and they loved it and they all completed the race and not one was last. Last year I had over seventy students ages 7-13 and handfuls of parents running the Thanksgiving day race and still not one of them was last and I don’t baby them. They work for me because I work for them. Keep encouraging kids need to shoot for dreams and stop listening to people who tell them they aren’t any good or can’t do something. We can all use a bit less of the nay sayers and a few more yes you cans in our lives…just my take!

Wow!! I love these two posts! When i think about my favorite classes in school it was not the “easy do nothing” classes… they were classes were i actually learned something and felt confident and challenged… The teacher really experienced their passion and enthusiasm to teach us… it was not just a job for them…

Same with coaching… most kids want to feel challenged and feel accomplishment/results… they feel like they actually did something positive… Motivating kids to get excited about results and make them believe in themselves is the true key! I remember i had a horrible soccer coach and i quit… he was mean, discouraging and took the fun out of the sport… He would put us down rather then challenge us and keep our hopes up… Both of your passions really show and it’s refreshing!! You really impact these kids’ lives
