thanks Cher, yes fruit has a lot of fiber compared to most grains, and also packs far more vitamins and nutrients in the same package. yes many are high in fruit sugars and have a high glycemic index, but the fiber (mostly soluble, meaning it dissolves in water) mitigates the insulin response and blood glucose effects of the sugar.
as far as Dr. Oz’s comments, in all honesty i think it’s a crock of crap and have never seen any research to prove what he is saying. every single thing you eat, even water, goes from your mouth, down your esophogus, and into your stomach where it comes into contact with a highly acidic environment, mostly hydrochloric acid. there your gastric acids break food down and transport the particles to your intestines where the nutrients are removed and shuttled into your blood stream for cleansing via your liver, pancreas, etc and distributed throughout your body.
the comments about fruit being blocked in the stomach and fermenting are absurd to be frank. it’s not like fruit dissolves within seconds and is transported straight to your liver, bypassing all the other systems. everything is thrown in the same pot to be broken down, regardless of the ph of the food. yes some things may take longer to break down than others depending on the fiber and strength of the chemical bonds, but nothing will ever sit in your stomach long enough to “ferment” and your stomach acids are more than strong enough to kill any bacteria that might casue that to happen anyways.
and for the record i’m not a fan of Dr. Oz. most doctors don’t know crap about nutrition.
