It’s crazy, once you read and fully understand the truth, it kinda feels like we’re living a lie. Everywhere you look in the food industry you’ll see things like “non-fat” and “low-fat”,  and you’ll see the way people eat with their high sugar diets and it’s really sad to see. Hopefully the government comes to its senses soon and does something to reverse this trend but there’s a lot of political red-tape and lobbying that is going to have to be fought through to make the necessary changes.

It can indeed be very frustrating.  I was married for 13 years to a Registered Dietition who was convinced that fat was evil but sugar was ok.

She battled her weight our whole marriage, living on a diet of carbs, carbs, carbs and then more carbs.  She would have meals of crackers and fruit juice.  If she ate candy she wouldnt eat a candy bar because of the fat, but would instead have something like “sweet tarts” which are pure sugar.

I eventually found out that she even went to the point of “purging” if her craving for fat got to be too much and she broke down and ate paeanut butter or something.

Four years of college education had completely convinced her that fat was evil.  I could do nothing to convince her otherwise.  The really sad thing is that she had high cholesterol!

I do think the tide is beginning to change, but its sad that colleges are still churning out RD’s with this outdated attitude, and that you can buy “light” yogurt at every supermarket that has no fat but a ton of sugar.

great article Nuwanee, and great point about the education system RDs are going through. most nutritionists i know regurgitate the incorrect crap they’ve learned in school instead of keeping up with the latest research, and the problem is that the educational info in schools is based on this bad governmental info.

Unfortunately there is a LONG lag time between new science and when something actually gets taught in school…    the low fat myth still has legs, but, thankfully, no longer really long legs…  I think we will see this put to rest in the next 5-10 years.

Examples of food containing  Monounsaturated and Polyunsaturated fats

Unsaturated Fats

Unsaturated fats are the good guys, and they are the good guys because they can improve your health overall. They are mostly found in vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, and fish. They are further categorized as monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats.

Monounsaturated fats are easily found in:

  • canola oil

  • peanut oil

  • olive oil

  • avocados

  • various seeds (e.g. Pumpkin, sesame)


Polyunsaturated fats are easily found in:

  • Sunflower seeds

  • Walnuts

  • Flaxseed

  • Pine nuts

  • Pecans

  • Almonds

  • Cashews

  • Chia seeds

  • Flaxseed oil

  • Canola oil

  • Soybean oil

  • Omega-3 fats (fish)
