A berry?! Wow, that’s pretty freakin crazy. I’ll admit I’ve always been confused about the whole fruit/vegetable tomato issue. Thanks for clearing that up… the explanation is actually far more fascinating than I would’ve ever thought!

“One interesting thing about lycopene is that it becomes more bioavailable (your body can ingest it better) when it has been processed – meaning you get more benefit from your tomatoes by getting them from cooked or processed sources such as pastes and sauces”

This is great!!

I love no salt added diced canned tomatoes!

Instead of ketchup and other processed condiments i use this.

I make my own tomatoes sauce by adding basil, salt pepper, pepper flakes, garlic, chili and cumin.

It is soooo good with chicken and fish..

This is so interesting because most fruits/vegetables lose there nutrients when cooked…

A+ for ME!

yeah, ketchup is terrible. it’s basically a ton of sugar with tomatoes, if you’re lucky. ketchups are pumped full of nasty chemicals and additives to keep them from browning… if you’ve ever seen a ketchup in a restaurant that doesn’t have any additives or preservatives in it, it is usually a dark crimson red or even brown color, and totally unappetizing. there are a ton of other sauces you can make with tomatoes that are not only healthier, but also better tasting than ketchup.

Whoa, tomatoes aren’t orginally from Europe? Then how come the Italians have all the best dishes with tomatoes in them?

Ummm.. that is a weird question!!

It does not matter were they were originated from.. Europe has farms and grows tomatoes.

Preparation, fresh spices and herbs make a big difference too!

that’s not THAT weird a question, i didn’t know that either. Italian food (at least the American version) is so tomato-based that you would think they’ve been using tomatoes a lot longer than just 600 years.

i make a pretty killer spaghetti sauce with roasted peppers, garlic, basil, oregano, sun dried tomatoes, tomato sauce and spices. you can make a really tasty meat sauce out of it by adding ground beef or turkey, or you can just use it straight. goes great with gnocchi or spaghetti squash.
