Great article Pete! The grapefruit diet is one of those diets that sounds so hokie that it never gets any actual attention, but its really interesting to see that there actually is some research behind it. I totally agree with you that it could be more due to the various other factors than to any compounds exclusive to grapefruit, so it could be interesting to see what other research emerges in the future, but I might just have to start getting a lot more grapefruit in my diet! ^_^

Any recommendations on a specific type of grapefruit to look for?

a) always try to use red/pink grapefruit (there’s no difference) over white. the red/pink kind is loaded with beta-carotene and lycopene, while the white doesn’t have near the nutrients.

b) if you’re going to be getting extra sugar in your diet, grapefruit is not a bad place to get it. sugar, when packaged with fiber and a ton of nutrients like the ones found in grapefruit, is fine.

c) i’d recommend you find star ruby grapefruit (from TX) or ruby red grapefruit (from FL or CA). those are the sweeter kinds and have a nice red fruit. to find a good one, pick up the fruit; the heavier the better. the skin should be a nice yellow color, but a twinge of orange or pink is ok.

Pete do you have any yummy recipes with grapefuit??
I either like adding stevia or slenda and eating it just like that

or I like adding it to salads..

arugila, walnuts, feta or blue cheese with maybe raisins or cranberries..

grapefruit and blueberries are too completely separate fruits. it’s like comparing apples and oranges (no pun intended). blueberries have more fiber, they have different anti-oxidants, grapefruit are more high volume. they’re both great fruits, but i wouldn’t ever say one is better than the other.

i usually eat them raw with a spoon, and without any swetener on top. i don’t particularly like stevia, and honestly good grapefruits are more than sweet enough to eat by themselves. if it is too sour for you, you likely aren’t getting the right kind or suck at picking them, haha.

i’ve had some really interesting salads with grapefruit, but the best was this mix of avocado and grapefruit slices, covered in a sweet honey mustard dressing. it was really tasty and refreshing, and the nutrient profile was pretty hard to beat.

Wow, this is crazy! I always thought the grapefruit diet was a complete hoax. Thanks for sharing! I’ll definitely have to watch out for more research and see if they find more about this!
