We all need vital amounts of vitamin D for good health, but do tanning beds offer comparable amounts to the sun?

This article goes into the two types of rays, UVA and UVB.  The healthier of the two are UVB rays, which are more surface level and offer the health benefits of vitamin D.  UVA rays penetrate deeper into skin leaving a tan, which is potentially damaging.   Most tanning salons are more focused on UVA rays (calibrate their beds to emit 95% UVA rays).  UVA rays create the tan, but also the most harmful effects of sun.

I definitely wouldn’t recommend using tanning beds for Vitamin D supplementation, although some parts of the country are always so overcast and lack adequate sun exposure to give you a good amount. I would say if you can’t get enough natural sunlight you should resort to Vitmin D-3 gelcaps, which are very affordable, over using a tanning bed.

i agree with Nuwanee, i would definitely look to supplements before a
tanning bed. with supplements you avoid the UV radiation and cancer
risk but still get the numerous benefits of vitamin D. as long as you
are taking the right form of D (D3) in liquid form and take it with some
fat (vitamin D is fat soluble) there shouldn’t be any problems with
absorption.
obviously it would be best to get it from natural
sunlight since evolutionarily that is the way we get most of our D, but
like Nuwanee said some places in the country just don’t leave you much
of a choice with sunlight.

the supplements are
reliable and far safer than tanning beds or even arguably natural
sunlight.

I’ve always been scared to use tanning beds because of the radiation exposure/cancer risk, it’s nice to finally see an explanation of it.

Wow, glad I never decided to try fake-n-baking. Not that I approve of guys doing that anyways, but it’s definitely out of the question now, haha.

great I am going to start tanning more than ever now!!  lol :)  If the tanning beds are still up in the air, what about laying out outside in the sun?  is that better for you?  o and whats a better way to get vitamin D, milk or sun?
