This is scary because I get the pink and whites done every 3 weeks!
Shellac Nail Gel Manicures
By DR. SAPNA PARIKH
MYFOXNY.COM - Shellac nail gel is the new fad for women. It is a manicure that is supposed to last for weeks. But is the little miracle in a bottle too good to be true? The makers of the product say your manicure will last 14 days and it wont even chip.
Here’s the process: First a base coat, then you dry your nails under an ultraviolet light for 10 seconds. Next, your first coat of shellac nail gel just like regular polish. Then your hands go back under that ultraviolet light for 2 minutes.
Another coat of shellac and a couple more minutes of UV drying. Then some top coat and one final stop under the ultraviolet rays to dry. Finally the manicurist wipes your nails down with some alcohol, adds some cuticle oil. And you are finished.
In the name of research, I decided to try it. After two weeks, there were only two small chips, but otherwise the nails looked pretty good.
Dr. Doris Day, a board certified dermatologist in New York City, said her biggest concern is the ultraviolet light.
“Every time you’re exposed to UV light, there’s damage to the skin,” Dr. Day said. “Enough damage over time can become problematic.”
That UV damage can make the skin on your hands look older and even worse.
“I do worry about skin cancer over time with that UV exposure,” she said.
In fact, a case report out of the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Texas says that UV light may have caused skin cancer on the hands of two healthy middle-aged women.
So if you do this every once in a while before a vacation or a big event, it’s probably not a problem.
KEY POINT!!!!
But I would put sun block on your hands before you go and try to not to look right at the UV light because it could cause damage to your eyes.
