I am curious to now what would be the major changes to a program if
someone only is concerned about muscle growth and not strength?

If you are concerneed with muscle strength you would most lilely be training in the ranges of 1-6 reps. IF you are looking for purely growth you would probably be training in the 8-12 rep range as that is the best rep range for hypertrophy type training. Also, the amount of rest would change. For strength gains- the rest would be anywhere from 2-5 minutes. For hypertrophy (muscle growth) the rest would be between 1-2 minutes, because you always want to keep THE PUMP at whatever muscle group you are working!

I agree with Mike about his training explanation..

However your diet will change as well if you were looking for growth…

You would have to increase calories dramatically.  If you were trying to avoid fat gain you would do a form of carb cycling or eat clean carbs and fats.

There is a huge huge difference!!

There are many strength athletes that do not look as strong as they are… mass is not there goal

That is very true. I also think a lot of different body types respond a lot differently to different types of training. Some people grow big time on 8-12 reps, but, I have personally witnessed more growth from CERTAIN people doing only 1-4 reps. It is very interesting. The key to all of it was that they were LIFTING HEAVY WEIGHTS though! And, getting a lot of protein :)

True… i see guys come in the morning lifting small weights… its sad because they wake up at 5 am every morning to look the SAME!!!!

Their goal is to build muscle but then they go on the treadmill, play with core exercises and do plyos… i just don’t understand what they are thinking???

They play around with fancy one leg balance exercises and do kettle bell swings with light weight lol… it looks like they are training for a marathon

I think half of that has to do with complacency as well. I think they are COMFORTABLE throughout their entire workout so they just continue to do it. Results means you need to work hard…and a lot of people don’t like to get outside of their own comfort zome to do so.

true..
i cant see how people could  wake up that early to not workout hard?

for example today i went to the gym at 5am really tired.. by the weight, exercises, reps and sets it would look like i had a really good workout.. however i just didnt feel that pump i was looking for.. in my mind i had a bad workout..

I could never imagine just going to the gym and lifting small weight just going through the motions and walking on a treadmill.. i think its such a waste.. i would rather sleep in

It is a great question, but it is the truth. For whatever reason people just do not want to go out of their comfort zone. They just get so comfortable doing what they are doing. I honestly think a lot of it has to do with them being reluctant to listen to anybody else. They don’t think they should have to listen to anyone else in order to get fit. So, not only do they not listen but they try to do the opposite in SPITE of that person. Just my .02

I hear you… there is this older man (maybe late 60’s) in my gym that has NO clue what he is doing… i feel so bad…

His form is horrible and his shoulders are all hunched forward (he looks like the hunch back of Notre dame)

He spends 15 minutes doing side bends (I don’t even know if i could call them side bends… it’s like a half a bend with horrific form)

Then he goes on the stationary bike (all hunched over) doing shoulder press, lateral raises, and arm circles with 8lb dumbbells… i feel so bad for him because i actually think he is doing more harm to his body and causing more muscle imbalances.

I want to say something to him but i think he will take offence to my suggestions… I seriously think he would be better off not even going to the gym… that’s how bad it is!

That is truly just too bad. However, I am under the belief that doing ANYTHING at the gym is better than nothing at all. I know it may be done correctly and all that, but, it is better than nothing! I guess them working out is a step in the right direction and more than half the other americans!

Yes lori I am not social or mentally ready for morning workouts. My body may be ready more days then others but mentally I just can not get into morning workouts that is why I do not like them. However, I do them so that I get the spider webs out so to speak.
