Yup work on technique your squat believe it or not should concentrate more on the hips. things to try!
1) Sit back when lowering to the squat position (Do not fold up)
2) Drive the knees out and force your hips forward (Like doing a hip thrust but standing
3) Get a good soft set of knee wraps from andersonpowerlifting.com call him he can tell you what you need.
4) Most importantly look up never down or in a mirror

These are just some suggestions and by no means are a cure all. If you want to see good female squat technique youotube laura phelps her technique is unmatched.

Could you post a video from when you do your squats? Do you take any type of supplements to help with this? How about fish oil and glucosamine? are your knees tracking out over your toes? How low are you squatting??

i would start by taking 10 grams of EPA/DHA, or fish oil, ideally from a high potency source so you don’t have to take a ton of pills. EPA/DHA are anti-inflammatory and should take away most, if not all, of the joint pain. once the pain goes away you can back off to a smaller dosage, but i would recommend 10 grams until you see the pain go away.

Pete what if its an actual injury?? i dont think fish oil heals “real injury” i guess it wont hurt to take fish oil either way but pay close attention to your form and what activates the pain.. Dont just assume its inflammation

she said “joint pain”. this typically is not due to an injury perse, but more to either improper mechanics, or just plain tendonitis, which is caused by inflammation. the fish oil wouldn’t heal an injury, but it might help it heal faster. in this case, it sounds like she has some tenodonitis/inflammation in her joints that needs clearing up, and fish oil without a doubt can help with that. if she believes it’s an injury she should go see a doctor or a physical therapist to check it out.

Lori, is the pain sharp and piercing in specific spots, or is it more like an ache and really bad soreness in the joints?

Yep - sounds like it is an ache, not necessarily an injury. I just say that because she said joint pain and it is off and on. And, she also mentioned that it really only hurts while squatting. If it were a serioujs injury it would hurt more than when just doing squats. Fish oil and glucosamine all day!!

That makes sense Pete… if she “KNEW” for sure it was joint pain then it most likely is tendonitis or inflammation… My husband gets tendonitis in his knees and right now he has bad elbow tendonitis… the doctor gave him anti inflammatory medicine and I got his krill oil… I think its getting better… My only concern is that most people can’t tell the difference between joint pain, muscle strain and other serious problems… too many people try to diagnose themselves and they end up with serious injuries… I would suggest taking fish oil and see if the pain sub sides within due time… if it doesn’t i would go to a doctor just to have it checked out…

I hate ice baths too. But they do help. I go to cryotherapy it works wonders and is not near as bad as an ice bath but way more effective.

I haven’t been taking any supplements. I do take my regular vitamin C but that is all. I do beleive my knees are not tracking over my toes. When i squatt I go all the way to the bottom of the floor. (meaning almost touching the floor i’m not actually
touching the ground.)

The pain seems to only be in my knees when i squatt all the way down when i’m doing those exercises. So I could be doing them incorrectly and will look at the video butch mentioned earlier. What do you think? Maybe I will try a low does of fish oil, see my comment further down about my question on the side effects from fish oil.
Thanks Laura.

Amen to that Laura, amen to that. I completley agree!!!!!!!!
No way!!!!! I know some people  who love do do the ice baths , and they say they recover better with those, but i would agree I would tolerate the pain, but they may need to depending on what kind of fitness they are in. It’s bad enough when you go into the cold ocean for fun. :)

There is no side effects to taking fish oil. Fish oil is a supplement that you can not over dose on. If you take to much of it you body simply gets rid of the excess. Its one of the savest things you can take.

Lori, i’d really have to see the squats to really be able to tell if it’s a mechanical issue, but it’s also possible that you are just really inflexible and need to squat more to allow your muscles and joints to get accustomed to the movement. if you have just started doing squats or are now integrating more of them into your program, it might just be your body getting used to the movements and not be due to anything serious. either way i would recommend the fish oil since it is one of the best things you could possibly put in your body and helps with any sort of inflammation problem, but it’s really up to you.

as far as glucosamine, make sure that the supplement you take has chondroitin in it as well, otherwise your body won’t properly absorb and use all of the glucosamine and you will just end up wasting a bunch of money.

Depends how active you are to determine how many you really need. There have been times that training was so intense that i was taking 40 a day. You probably dont have to take that many but i would say probably 8 to 12 somewhere in that area would be good for you.

Laura I heard that fish oil really helps and I was taking the same amount as rob but felt nothing from it, then I was taking about 6 ibuprofen a day and it helped alot more with my joint pain and inflamation. This should be a better way to same money and pills while curing your joint pain and inflimmation.

I m not really sure about this max… there are a ton of positive studies done on fish oil…

Ibuprofen is medicine which i am sure is not recommended to take everyday… fish oil has so many health benefits and great to take every day (not only or inflammation).

I would think ibuprofen is great to take on occasion when you are not seeing results from fish oil kind of like an alternative…
