I know there was a small discussion on this in the middle of another thread, so I Thought I would make it its own thread. What do you guys think? Should you even do a lot of weight training if your technique is terrible?

would you just be asking to be worse off by injuring yourself? OR, is any movement at all better than no movement?

I guess if you know your form sucks hopefully you would have enough sense to change it. If you don’t hopefully experts around you would help you. Although I must say that must be the teacher in me. I will stop someone and help them wanted or not. Some one did it for me and if you know better you should share it. They may think I am an a** but at least I tried. It is about sharing what we know and have learned. Not sure it answers the question. The body can adapt to many things..poor form even. Better than doing nothing at all yeah probably unless it is a huge mistake.

you can always fix technique, but motivation is the hard part of the equation. i would rather someone go to the gym and exercise, and make it a habit, than be afraid to work out because they don’t know how to do things properly. the benefits you get from exercise far outweigh the drawbacks of working out with poor form, and it’s likely that someone will step in to help you fix form before you do anything that could cause a major injury.

Amen. I am competely with you Peter. The motivation is the part of whether you usually have it or you don’t.

Good point pete, but at what stage of working out with bad technique do you think it would need to be fixed? or if at all for the average gym goer?

I agree with pete. Like in olympic lifting we always talk about technique and doing it right. We try to do it right with all are weights but when your going to maximum. That pr attempt is usually the ugliest thing in the world. Its just about doing it at that point.
