Jicama is a tuber vegetable of the bean or legume family (Fabaceae). This edible, starchy, and tuberous root is high in vitamin C and low in sodium, cholesterol, and saturated fat. It is also referred as yam bean, Mexican turnip, Mexican potato, saa got, Chinese turnip, ahipa, Chinese potato and the lo bok. It has similar appearance like a turnip or a large radish and taste like a cross between a water chestnut and an apple. So, it is also used as substitute for the water chestnut. In Latin America, it is a popular dietary staple and has a delightful crunchy texture along the lines of water chestnuts.

Jicama is available year-round, being a versatile vegetable. It can be either taken in raw form or cooked form. In raw form, it is used in salads and has similar flavor to a pear or apple. When taken in raw form, peeling off is necessary before consuming. In many raw vegetable platters, it is frequently used as it does not get spoiled or discolored even left in open after peeling. Also, it may be boiled, baked, fried or mashed like potatoes. In various stir fried recipes, it is an excellent complement because it easily absorbs the flavors of the other ingredients on cooking. Only the tuberous root of the plant is suitable for human consumption because other parts of the plant may have poisonous effect on the body. After getting a brief knowledge about jicama vegetable, take a look on nutritional data of jicama, how to choose it, cook it and what benefits it offers

jicama is great to add to salads. it is really similar to a carrot or a radish, but with less flavor, so it adds a nice refreshing crunch and texture. it is super rare to see people using this in home cooking, although i’ve heard of more people from the south integrating it into recipes than anywhere else in the country.
