Natto

“We’ve really messed up the way we eat soy. Natto is fermented soybeans and very popular in Japan, which is where I had it.

It’s becoming more popular here and this is most likely due to its health benefits. Nearly all the soy options we’re offered in the U.S. are non-fermented.

The list of health benefits of fermented soy is a mile long. It’s associated with reducing the risk of cancer, minimizing the likelihood of blood clotting, aiding digestion, increasing blood circulation, an improved immune system, improving bone density, lessening the likelihood of heart attacks, more vibrant skin, and reducing the chance of balding. And it also has strong antibiotic properties, among other things.

So you might want to ditch the soy crisps, soy ice cream, and your iced soy mochas and add some natto to your diet.

natto is a super popular dish in japan, most commonly eaten over rice for breakfast. people either love it or hate it cause it has a very very distinct taste. i’ve had it, and hated it. and as you can see from that picture above, it has a very unappetizing appearance. then again, so do a lot of things in japan.

the caveat to that quote from the original post is that even though fermented soy contains a ton of good things, it also still contains all those phyates and anti-nutrients that have people backing off from soy these days. just like anything else, it’s okay to eat in moderation but just don’t go overboard with it.

I’m with Pete, that stuff is nasty. I’ve had it and it’s horrible, but my grandparents ate it almost every morning over rice when I was really young. It might be an acquired taste, but I don’t know why you’d want to acquire that one with so many other good options for breakfast! ^_^

The texture is super sticky and stringy, but you do have the soy beans in there too. You can eat it cold or hot but I don’t know why you’d want it cold since it tastes bad enough. It is very… pungent, for lack of a better word. I do recommend you try it cause some people love it and you may end up being one of those, but it’s pretty hard to find out of an Asian grocery store, but you may be able to find it in the Asian section of your health food store.

natto over rice is pretty popular, but they also will eat fried rice, or tamago (egg, typically sweetened with sugar) in the form of an omelet, broiled fish, pickles, rice porridge, etc. their breakfast is a lot lighter than a typical american breakfast, and you won’t see heavy things like potatoes or pancakes or cereal.

sweet eggs and fish for breakfast?? intresting… i think thats pretty cool.. does the asian culture see food and drinks as a social aspect for just for survival purpose.. i know this sounds like a silly question but i am curious..

why do they eat oatmeal, healthy pancakes, cereal ect… i am sure they like the taste???

Eeeeewwww, this stuff looks gross! I don’t care what it tastes like, I don’t think I could eat it. I’m a pretty visual person and if something makes me queasy just looking at it I don’t think I could even bring myself to put it in my mouth.
