Krill OIl

Have you heard of krill oil?

I hear its the next best thing to FISH OIL!!

“Krill oil offers all the health benefits of fish oil but at a much lower dose, according to a study commissioned by krill oil supplier Aker BioMarine.

The Norway-based company, which markets Superba krill oil, teamed up with researchers from the University of Oslo and Akerhus University College to evaluate the two forms of Omega 3 in a study involving 113 subjects over seven weeks.

The researchers gave one group 543mg of Omega 3 DHA and EPA daily from krill oil, a second group 864mg of DHA and EPA daily from fish oil and a third group a placebo.

The results showed a significant and comparable increase in plasma EPA, DHA and DPA levels in the subjects in the first two groups, indicating that both the krill oil and fish oil were as effective as each other.

However, Aker said: “It is important to note that the total amount of EPA and DHA provided in the krill oil supplementation was just 62.8% of that provided in the fish oil with comparable results.”

Aker said the most probable reason for this is that krill oil contains Omega 3 in the form of phospholipids, whereas most fish oils contain
Omega 3 in the form of triglycerides or ethyl esters. “The phospholipid form has previously been shown to be more bio-efficient than the triglyceride form,” claimed Aker.

The study, published in the academic journal Lipids, also indicted that krill oil had a superior effect on the HDL cholesterol/triglyceride ratio in the subjects’ blood – which Aker said represented a “significant improvement in a known risk predictor for coronary heart disease which was not seen after fish oil treatment”.

Hogne Vik, one of the researchers, said: “This study confirms that a lower dose of EPA and DHA is required when taking krill oil phospholipids, compared to the triglyceride form of Omega 3. In addition to improving blood levels of these essential Omega 3 fatty acids, a statistically significant improvement of the HDL cholesterol/triglyceride ratio was demonstrated, again showing the health benefits of Superba.”

krill are the thing that salmon eat to get their pink color and super high amount of omega-3 fatty acids. farmed salmon don’t eat krill, they eat grain instead - that is the reason they aren’t pink and don’t have the same fatty acid profile. krill oil is a good, and since they are so small you don’t have to worry as much about mercury (bigger fish live longer and have more time to accumulate mercury in their bodies).

Do you have to take this in the oil form or do they have pills like with fish oil?

I’m pretty sure they have krill oil pills that you can buy just like fish oil. Krill is another good source of omega-3 fats, so if you aren’t taking any sort of fish or krill oil, you might want to consider trying this! ^_^

i would probably go in this order:

1. wild salmon
2. krill oil
3. fish oil

the whole salmon is gonna have other nutrients in it, and it’s one of the best sources of protein you’ll find.

the benefits of krill vs. fish oil are probably negligible, the important thing is that you take one of them. if i had to choose one, i’d go with krill oil, but up until recently it was very rare and hard to find. fish oils are cheaper and much easier to find, so most people will probably take that, which is fine. if you can find a good krill oil then take it, but it’s not gonna be a matter of life and death if you take fish oil instead.

what were his reasons? we have very specific reasons for the guys taking that much fish oil, and we wouldn’t recommend people on average training schedules to take that much, but i’d love to hear his explanation for our guys not taking it. i’m sure you know my opinion about doctors’ lack of nutrition knowledge, but if he knows of some definitive research showing otherwise i would love to see it.

the reason they take that much fish oil is to prevent inflammation. these guys train heavy twice a day, 6 days a week and the toll on their bodies is beyond anything you or your doctor friend could imagine. the fact that our guys are inflammation free, with no side effects, speaks for itself.

That’s true… I am sure it is effective however i am curious to know if there are any side effects…

Have you guys done testing rather then just seeing the positive effects on inflammation?

I am not arguing with you… We are on the same page about our thoughts on doctors and nutritionist… however i am curious to know if taking THAT much fish oil is 100% healthy…

Everything in moderation!! I don’t think there amounts are moderate.

they’ve been doing this for years, i am sure we would see something by now if there were adverse effects. it’s just fat, you could get the same effect from eating a ton of salmon and tuna. i don’t really understand what kind of side effect there could be.

what kind of testing would you recommend we do? the guys get tested for drugs and whatnot regularly and we haven’t ever had any red flags.

and as for moderation, their fish oil amounts aren’t moderate, but niether are their amounts of training and inflammation. we have them take the fish oil to combat the increased amount of inflammation and tendinitis they should have due to their training, and it works.

Yeah, you used to not be able to find krill oil anywhere. I can’t even remember when they actually started making this stuff, but I started seeing it in stores 2-3 years ago. They have started airing commercials on TV for it too and it’s like the next big thing now that fish oil has become mainstream. The research is pretty promising, but until it is as cheap and available as fish oil, I doubt it will be mainstream.

krill are only one step higher on the oceanic food chain than phytoplankton and you can find them in every single ocean on earth. salmon are an endangered species. there are far more krill than salmon. there are, however, far fewer companies that manufacture krill oil than fish oil. think of krill oil like dark chocolate - on the rise. more companies are popping up to manufacture it, but it’s still not nearly as popular or available as fish oil.

yeah, seeing as its estimated that krill have twice the biomass of the entire human population, it’s surprising that they don’t make more of this stuff. i’m sure as the research gets disseminated, more companies will look to capitalize on the krill oil market. it should be cheaper to produce krill oil due to availability alone. hopefully they don’t mess up the ocean’s food chain by overproducing though…

You can find this stuff at most drugstores, but it is super expensive. Even the CVS name brand stuff is like $25 for 60 capsules. It sounds like it is more concentrated than fish oil, so maybe you can take less of it, but seeing as you can get like 8000 fish oil capsules for like $3 at Costco, I don’t see why you wouldn’t just go that route and take more fish oil to get the same effects.

true.. that is pretty expensive but think about it.. You would spend that much if not more of protein powder..

It seems like krill oil provides more health benefits then a powders..

I wonder why people dont mind spending more on other supplements??
