I was thrilled to see that my gym now carries kettle bells. I have seen the commercials and have used them with a friend with a pre training workout. So I remembered what my friend taught me last summer doing “Kettle Bell Swings”. They really do work…  I have added them into my workout routine and really can see a difference in my core.
I highly recommend them to anyone who is at any fitness level.
Does anybody else out there agree?

Kettlebells are amazing. I highly recommend seeing an RKC in your area (check out dragondoor.com) before jumping into kettlebell exercises on your own. Not only do you want to avoid injury (obviously), but if you learn the proper way to use these tools you’ll be much more effective and efficient.

Amanda i hear on you that…

I love kettle bells however i see trainer at my gym training women with HEAVY ass kettle bells… they make their clients snatch over their head and other advanced exercises…

I think its a great exercise however super risky with heavy heavy weight… these women cant even do heavy barbell squats?

i just don’t see how its safe to be lifting that over your head when you are not in the greatest shape.

Am i wrong? I just see injuries in their near future but maybe i am wrong

There are a lot of things I’ve seen trainers doing with clients that are not a good idea. (Understatement of the year.)
I’m curious who the trainers are at your gym…is it a big box gym? I wonder if they actually got their RKC or if they took a quick online course in kettlebell training or something like that.
Clients can certainly snatch once they have perfected their swing…just depends on the person’s ability and also if they have had any past injuries. We have clients that snatch kettlebells and I snatch kettlebells all the time even though I have had shoulder injuries. BUT…I warm up before hand with turkish get ups and I also have a ton of experience and know when my form is breaking down that it’s time to stop!

I train at New York sports club .. it s huge cooperate chain.. They have a TON of gyms on the east coast.. Its pretty easy to get a job as a trainer.. i think the interview process should be more detailed then just looking at a resume..

It should be a demonstration interview

I always thought that when starting a personal training company that a trainers FIRST piece of equipment should be a kettlebell set. You can do just dozens of exercise all with a single set of equipment. Such an effective cardiovascular and muscular workout for everyone, young or old. You can do full range o fmotion stuff, or, limited stuff for people with injuries or flexibility issues. Great piece of equipment

Most gyms really do need to amp their interview process. It’s important to hire trainers with good personalities (and quite frankly, ones with varied personalities to get along with different clients). BUT…a lot of gyms put very little emphasis on knowledge and skill which is scary considering how easily you can hurt someone who is working out with you if you have no idea what you’re doing!

Amanda,
She has a studio she uses and teaches several classes a week.  A couple of years ago I was a regular. I am not even close to as talented and skilled as she is. But I learned several valuable lifts that I regularly perform. It’s one of those things where I’d like to learn more but just can’t find the time.

One of my favorite exercises with a kettlebell is the waiters walk. With your arm overhead walk as quickly as you can.
It does a great job on your core as you have to contract your abs to maintain good posture. Its also great for the shoulder as the rotator cuff muscles have to fire to keep the shoulder stable.
One of my favorite finishing exercises is the one arm swing. Working on getting the bell up with one arm and then switching really puts it to you

wow! i never actually thought about this one over head.. i usually think of farmers walk..

i bet its super hard to hold them over your head.. just like over head squats .. you have to use your whole body for balance.

speaking of balance.. what are your thoughts when you see people working on balance such as one leg bicep curls i leg shouder press ect??

i think its poinless.. i would rather have someone lift heavier weights then focus on balance.. anot od nsam trainers do this

Farmers walks are great too. What about suitcase carries? Suitcase carries are basically farmers walks with one arm so you have to focus on resisting the urge to lean to one side.
