Over the years of being a multi gym owner, fitness trainer and gym rat I
have seen numerous individuals come into gyms and buy memerships.
Usually the membership is bought right after the first of the year and
the person has all the right intentions and great attitude to be on
track for a great physique. They get help from someone in making a good
workout routine and an awesome cardio plan. They follow the plans like a
faithful dog to his owner. By the end of January they start asking the
fitness trainer or gym owner when they will start seeing results. Does
this sound familiar? What no one ever tells these great intentioned
potential future gym rats is the one word no one wants to hear…
INTENSITY! By March these people have given up on the gym because they
have seen no improvements which has in their minds caused them to,
“thrown all that money out the window”. I wish I had a nickel for
everyone who said, “I never got any results so I bought a home gym from
Sears”. Then of course that piece of equipment becomes a clothes rack in
the extra bedroom and its usually sold on craigslist by summer. All
this because no one ever told the person that you have to challenge
yourself in the gym. Make the weight difficult. If your doing 8 reps
make it almost impossible to do the last couple of reps. Don’t do what
you can easily handle. If doing what you can do easily was the proper
way to get results then I wouldn’t be writing this article and we would
have 100,000 people in every gym in the world. INTENSITY! Give it
everything you have in the gym. INTENSITY! Its not for the weak of
heart. If you can lift 20 pounds today do 30 next time. Push yourself.

I just wrote a bit on my journal about the same thing basically. People tend to go over board with the motivation which is temporary. Instead I started to change a bit of my philosophy about getting newbies hooked. Stop doing hour long workouts 7 days a week, when you have done nothing for a long time it only leads to missing a workout, and then two and three and making excuses. Why don’t you start with 10min. set a timer and go…push up sit up run in place. when the timer rings youre done. after 2 weeks add 5 min. add an exercise. Check the diet is there one thing you can live with out. Start with a little and try to gain momentum by seeing improvement. If we want to train ourselves to do something completely different we must start with small steps and continue to reinforce that new neurological pathway which will continue to become bigger and better. Intensity is what we must maintain as we get to the top. Why are we here? Not just to exist but to thrive!!! Good Stuff!

This reminds me of a time a rather large lady hired me to be her fitness trainer. She was pushing 400 pounds and all she wanted was to lose the weight. After she had been cleared by a doctor, I put her on a light circuit training workout and light cardio training program. She visited my nutritionist and was put on a diet.
All was good and I made her my project client and charged her close to nothing. When she had no money, I worked with her free of charge. When she couldn’t find a ride to the gym, I had one of my employee’s pick her up. I wanted her to lose that weight.
I worked with her 3 days a week for over a year but she refused to put any effort into the program. Of course she not only wasted my time and effort but she gained even more weight. Sad!

In the end, training and bodybuilding strictly complies with the old adage-“you get out of it what you put in to it”. H
alfway efforts will yield halfway results. Patience, dicipline, and determination to be the best I can be every time I walk into the gym-be it my home gym or the “health club”- are qalities that have served me well. really, if it was easy, for me it wouldn’t be any fun.

I love HIIT training, it lights my furnace on fire and when I have a Kettlebell in my hand and swing the crap out of it hitting 1000 reps in 20 minutes I feel pretty darn tired and like a Spartan!!  Love how HIIT rips the fat off and totally transforms ya!!

for those of you that don’t know IYAM. she has been a friend of mine for quite a while. she is a real inspiration and an absolute world of knowledge.
I am glad to see her and outlaw Donny take my advice on checking out muscledog.com…these are 2 great individuals!

I know genetics does play a lot on what you can acheive. However; I wish
I had a dime for everyone who walked into one of my gyms and gave a
half hearted effort and then walked up to me and said their genetics are
holding them back. Why not do everything you can EVERYTHING and then a
few years down the road walk up to me and say, ‘you know, my biceps
don’t respond as well as a genetically gifted persons would”. I would be
ok with that. But to only give a small percent for such a short amount
of time and blame genetics. Come on if I was your biceps I wouldn’t grow
either you would have given me a complex.
