powers

Today the team did power snatch power clean and jerk.  Every tuesday and thursdays coach has us power to work on the finish.  A power movement is catching the bar above 90 dagrees or above, so not catching the bar “in the whole”  You can do less weight becuase you cant drop underneath the weight as much, but it forces you to get your hips through so hard that your force of the hips will sky rocket that bar high enough to catch it high, lots of power!  so when you do the full lifts your legs and hips are ready to explode like TNT!!!!  2012 London

Power variations of the lifts are good. I feel that for beginners they may be a bad idea as it changes the dynamics of the lifts too much. A beginner that powers may have a harder time making big Snatches or Cleans when they have to catch the bar very low in the squat.

I agree completely, when I have my athletes start out we leave out the powers all together for the first year!  After that I like to slowly bring in the powers once my athletes are more advanced and understand the feeling of a good lift compared to a bad lift.  How long do you wait before having beginers do powers?

How much less weight do you guys typically do with power variations? Is it a % based amount or do you just start from a much lighter load and work your way up to the most you can do using that technique?

We go max on our power days, we push every power day to see if we can get a PR.  We go heavy everyday, power’s or fulls.  This type of training over time works very well, plus its fun to go heavy all the time!

Jon,
What are some tips to help me with the power clean? I have trouble with power cleans I can back squat like WAY more than i can power clean?

First
How do you miss the power clean?
How much is your best clean?
How much is your best squat?

do you only have problems with the power clean or do you have problems with the full clean as well?  Usually what happens on the power clean that people have the most trouble on is the finish.  When I say finish I mean shooting your hips through the bar with so much force that it shoots that bar so high you can get underneath it fast and high to power it.  So many people try to pull the bar with there arms, there is no power and explosion in the arms and the bar moves very slow not allowing you to get undernerath it fast enough to power.  If you have trouble hitting the bar with your upper thighs or hips, that means your shoulders are starting to get behind the bar before your hips come through.  you half to stay over the bar, keeping your shoulders over the bar intel the very last minute when the bar is in the right spot then your hips AND your shoulders at the SAME time explode.  hips through shoulders back and then feet and hands catch at the same time as well.  Its a hit and catch movement, HIT AND CATCH, HIT AND DROP, thats it, there is no pulling the bar with the arms after the hips come through.  Try this I think it will help you, I am coaching you in the dark though, tell me what you are doing wrong, maybe this is not your problem, i got more stuff in my coaching bag, lets hear it.

Missing the power clean huh, I dont know you either get out of the way or it going to crush you like a bug.  My best clean is one ninety two kilo’s my best front squat is two ten best back is two thirty.  Whats your?  whats your best snatch and clean and jerk also?  what are your goals, its refreshing to talk to someone who does Olympic weightlifting too.

How do you determine what you best sqaut is if you vary rep ranges..
Are you talking about your one rep max?? i always get confused with this question

Yea I mean your best one rep max.  We train alot of different reps for squats, no more than 5, but to an olympic weightlifting 5 is like cardio!   But most of the times we do singles, and then when we find out or best one rep squat.  I have never tappered and rested for a squat max, I wounder what it would be with a few days off and a month or two of just training for a max squat.   I am going to bring this up with coach becuase I am tired of squating small weights!!!!

I have beat big phill before and I will do it agian very soon, I will be number one again, I promise.

I am a little over a week out from my next meet, and I am happy to say that I am the strongest I have ever been, not physicaly but mentaly.  I went into The Pan Ams in great shape and did not do that well becuase my mind was my worst enimie.  I got in my own head, I got to nervouse, I lost my drive, my attituide and my confidence.  The chip on my shoulders smoothed out before I grabed the bar and thats not good, I need that chip to piss me off and lift big weights.  So the last month I have been training my mind in every practice to stay in the same mind set all through training, from 50 kilo’s to 150 kilo’s.  You need to approach every bar the same way, and I did not do that before.  I feel like a whole new lifter on and off the platform and I am ready to show everybody that on july 3rd when I become number one again.

I wish you the best of luck!!

At least you realized your strengths and weakness.

What did you do to overcome your mind set…? What rituals/routines did you engage in that helped you stay focused

Jumping Jonathan North is dead.  That was my nick name for the first two years in this sport.  I yelled, jumped, called people out, basicly I spent alot of energy putting on a show, but thats all over now.  The show is over, now its the weights that are going to be the star of the show, my gold medals, my international teams, and my Olympic debut in 2012 that is the new show.  I am done talking, now I just lift.  I am done thinking, now I just lift.  I have no feeling’s anymore its weird.  The talk and the hype put me in a satisfied mind set, witch was not good becuase I still have a long ways to go if I want to make an Olympic team.  I want to live and train in a dark hole, I want to be forgot about, pushed to the side, steped over, and when they are not expecting it I am going to come out of my whole and………..well you will see.    Thats my new mind set, train hard everyday, dont talk to anybody, eat meat drink milk sleep, and train more,  this is what it takes for me to be the best.   There is no such thing as over training, just under training.    2012

just this is a great mind set, its kinda sad to see jumping jonathan north gone htough, its a sign of you maturing in the sport which is good but also a sign that the time is gone and it is time to move on. I will miss those days watching jumpic jonathan north.

This is a GREAT topic!!
