Guys,

I have a very serious debate question for all of you…Do Championship rings simply dictate who is the GOAT? Or is it their entire play? For example - people talk about Peyton Manning being the GOAT….Whereas I say Joe Montana or Tom Brady (TB has the potential when it is all said and done).
-
Peyton Manning has 1 super bowl ring…and is 9-10 in the playoffs…Losing record in the playoffs! Tom Brady has 3 rings and something like 17-5 in the playoffs. Montana of course has 4 rings (I beloeve).
-
Do you HAVE to have at least 1 ring to be in the discussion? You can include basketball in this too, or any other sport. I mean, what about that pesons surrounding players? What if one player has terrible people and another person has 10 pro bowlers along side them? Ya know?

surrounding players/the rest of the team HAS to come into the discussion at some point. there are also many other factors that come into play, for example the level of competition throughout the rest of the league and even in that player’s conference. you can also say that the style of play and rules of the game dictate some things too. would Unitas and Montana have been able to sling it in the current pass-happy NFL, or would they have been middle of the road when compared to Manning/Brees/Brady/Rodgers? it’s all hard to say.you also have to take into account injuries, both to that player and significan players on their team… if Bob Sanders doesn’t struggle with injuries, does Peyton have a shot at 2-3 more rings? if Peyton didn’t have his neck problem, would he have still competed for a ring for the next 5 years with that team contructed around him? if Bledsoe never gets injured, is Brady never heard from in the first place and does Peyton have a dynasty in Indy?

the NFL isn’t like the NBA where there is a consensus that MJ was the best, and will probably never be surpassed as the best. you could argue that Kobe and Lebron have the chance to pass him, but i don’t think it ever happens. Kobe hasn’t ever done anything without Shaq or Gasol, and has some really terrible teams (and off the court issues) on his resume. Lebron has his whole career to this point without even 1 ring to shut the haters up. you could argue that MJ had Pippen and Rodman and everyone else, but when he retired they didn’t win, and then he came back and they went on another 3-peat.

the GOAT conversation is tough regardless of the sport, because sports evolve and change and it’s impossible to compare a current player with a past great, cause none of it happens in a vacuum. it’s all opinions.

GOAT has to be more than just the player it is a game changer some one who took the sport to another level, Laird Hamilton, Arnold, Shuan White..not just a team but change the view of the sport, Lance, Mike Phelps…I think it is even better when there is an obscure sport that moves to the forefront when something or better someone is having a huge impact. MJ made a team from nothing to something. Quarterbacks have way too many variables to relie on their ability. mariusz pudzianowski someone who stands out in something unknown. Ton of people jumped cars…who do you remember Evil ..of course. Hulk Hogan obscure to superstar.

GOAT? That is easy…There is only ONE GOAT. Michael Jordan. I don’t care what sport, what arena, MJ. He is the greatest athlete EVER. EVER EVER EVER. Haha I have a major man crush on him. Tiger Woods - GOAT! Nicklaus didn;t have even 1/1000th of the depth of the PGA Tour. TW is the GOAT.

There is an unbelievable amount of luck involved in any GOATs career, no doubt about it. However, I think ALL goats have one thing in common - pure relentlessness. They are fierce. They never ever quit.

If we are going strictly off of accolades I would say Bill Russel trumps Jordan and I am a Chicago guy. I believe Russel won 11 championships and if I recall 4 or 5 of them were as a player and a coach. Jordan was a spectacular athlete but to win a championship as a player and coach is other worldly IMO.
