had to share—this seems ridiculous…

Jersey Shore Cast Member Endorsing Protein-Infused Vodka

by Sara Reistad-Lon

Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino has signed on as an equity partner with Devotion Vodka, an 80-proof, triple-distilled vodka that contains casein, a milk-derived protein popular with bodybuilders, due, in large part, to the fact that studies have linked casein consumption to increased muscle mass. In a company press release, the “Jersey Shore” cast member said, “The protein fits very well with my lifestyle, and this is the only vodka to have it. I support Devotion on multiple levels.”

Robert Jones, co-founder and vice president of Devotion, said he wasn’t allowed to comment on any potential health benefits, due to regulations by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau. While the company itself also isn’t permitted to disclose how many grams of protein are in a shot, Sorrentino said he believes he’s getting about 2 grams. Is there any actual benefit to this? We asked two top health and nutrition experts to sort through the hype.

Stephanie Middleberg, registered dietitian and founder of Middleberg Nutrition, said, “Having phrases like ‘increase in lean body mass’ and ‘alcohol consumption’ in one sentence doesn’t make much sense. I would never look to drinking alcohol as a way to get in more vitamins or nutrients. First, protein is so incredibly easy to get in your diet. Most people overconsume protein. Second, alcohol contains a large amount of empty calories that often leads to weight gain. When I work on weight loss programs with clients, I always need to decrease their alcohol content because it’s normally one of the biggest calorie offenders. A single shot of alcohol contains about 102 calories, so a night out drinking with mixers involved could add up to 1,000 calories easily! Plus, most likely some sort of late-night eating is involved after, which I can almost promise you will contain more protein than what’s in the drink.”

Dr. David Colbert, author of “The High School Reunion Diet,” said, “Partiers would be better off following Chelsea Handler’s advice and just stick to Belvedere vodka and a lean steak if they’re trying to build muscle. Alcohol is toxic to muscles and causes them to shrink. It also creates a layer of fat around the abdomen, which will make your six or eight or 12-pack disappear rapidly. In other words, not only is 2 grams of casein protein not very much [a lean steak provides up to 50 grams], but it will actually more likely be turned to fat — not muscle. Also be warned: Vodka will reduce your testosterone and growth hormone levels. In high enough doses, it’s even been linked to gynecomastia — enlarged breasts in men. And that’s a ‘situation’ no guy wants to be in.”

That actually sounds pretty perfect that that guy would endorse something like this, cause I could only see tools like him go for something this retarded. I don’t know a whole lot about nutrition, but even I could’ve told you that this is the worst idea ever. I fully expect either the owner of this company or some of the guys on the Jersey Shore to end up on the Darwin Awards one of these years.

agreed…there’s no hope for that “situation”…

would think beer / wine would offer more benefits (as far as all alcohol goes)…

“Thanks to its malted barley, beer also contains protein, at the rate of 0.7 to 2.1 grams per bottle. While most of the larger proteins are lost during the brewing process, beer still contains all the essential amino acids.  Malted barley also gives beer plenty of vitamins, particularly B vitamins. A bottle of beer can contain 10 to 20 percent of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of niacin, riboflavin, pyridoxine, and folate.”

“how to be fit” dot com? sorry but i wouldn’t consider beer a legitimate source of protein either. with those numbers you would have to drink, on the low end, around 10 beers to get a significant amount of protein. not exactly the way “to be fit”.

seriously, some of this crap saddens me. just because something contains amino acids and people can say it has protein it suddenly becomes a health food…

c’mon, pete—we live in mcdonalds nation.  seeing stuff like this shouldn’t surprise you… :)

it’s true though—people are always looking to justify their bad habits—whatever possible scraps they can cling to…it’s the nature of the american beast!

yeah, i mean infusing vodka with cassein is one thing and i’m actually not surprised that they tried that (i’m actually more surprised they didn’t shoot for more than 2 grams…), but claiming that the “up to 2 grams” of protein that you’ll get from a bottle of beer makes it healthy?… cmon. what a joke.

it’s things like that that upset me about the health/wellness/supplement industry. it’s crap like that that confuses people and makes them not sure what to believe. this is part of the problem we are facing today and a reason why people don’t even try to live a healthier lifestyle - because they don’t know what “healthier” really is…

O I thought this was interesting to.  Ronnie coleman said on an interveiw that his best body building meet was when him and another pro had a few shots of vodka the night before the meet, and when they woke up the next morning to compete they were shredded!  cut like crazy because the alchole dehidrates you I guess and it ended up helping him he said, anything thoughts on thi?????  you guys are the pro’s on this kind of stuff.

Well, alcohol does dehydrate you, just like most non-water liquids (coffee, tea, soda), but I don’t think I’d recommend drinking the night before a meet or competition. It might have worked for Ronnie that time but did he make that part of his routine before every meet after that?

This whole infused vodka thing sounds stupid and I’m not surprised the Jersey Shore crew is involved with this. I can’t stand that show…

This whole vodka infused casein product is compete BS… I can’t believe people would be dumb enough to buy it unless it tasted good and the price was right…

Pete, you could no have said it better… This kind of marketing confuses people (especially the people who want the easy way out minus the guilt).

These products and claims make me angry.  People do not realize what it takes to live a healthy lifestyle and be in shape.  It’s not ALL about genetics, restricted calories, and special supplements… It’s a lot of work, dedication and a lifestyle change…

No wonder why people are so confused… At least most of us (on muscle dog) have an interest in fitness/nutrition so we are privileged to enjoy reading and researching article.

Unfortunately the majority of people don’t even know what direction to turn… They will try to take the shortest route which never works, they end up getting lost and starting from the beginning…

Wow, this is sooo stupid! I hope people don’t actually buy into this… I wonder what kind of dumb investor thought this would be a good idea and helped fund the making of it.
