Japanese snap up ‘fat burning’ underwear

Some people go on a diet. Others go to the gym. But in Japan a more novel way of losing weight is fast gaining popularity – wearing “fat burning” underwear.

By Danielle Demetriou in Tokyo

A growing number of Japanese men and women keen to lose weight are slipping into underwear which claims to burn hundreds of calories a week, simply by wearing them.

Perfect for exercise-shy food-lovers, the MXP Calorie Shaper Pants are made with non-elasticated material that the company claims can make muscles work extra hard while walking or climbing stairs.

The new underpants, from the Tokyo-based Goldwin company, claim that the average 10 stone man who walks 90 minutes a day while wearing them can lose 210 kilocalories weekly – the equivalent of half a litre of beer.

Key to the technology implemented in the underwear – which cost £23.52 (Y2,940) and are currently only on sale in Japan – is a resin which is printed on fabric to prevent it from stretching.

The extra muscle strength required to balance the tension in the resin during normal walking activities results in effortless loss weight, according to a spokesman for Goldwin.

“The concept behind this product is a pair of pants for every day life, generally for business men and women aged between 35 and 45,” he told the Daily Telegraph.

“The Calorie Shaper Pant technology focuses on the hipline which is the area used by people when walking and climbing stairs. The material here is non-expandable which means they must use their muscles more.” He added:
“Calorie burning clothing and footwear are becoming increasingly popular in Japan.”

The underpants also boast deodorising particles, increasingly popular in salaryman clothing particularly during summer months, to keep the garments fresh.

The underwear is the latest in a string of innovative products designed to help Japan’s workforce stem a surge in the overweight.

The government has launched a number of campaigns in recent years to slim down the nation, targeting mostly salarymen suffering from middle-aged spreads around their waists.
