lose weight = getting paid?  not thinking this would fly in the US, but it’s a way for people to stay motivated….what are everyone’s thoughts?

Article excerpt (from aolhealth.com):
Can people be bribed into better health? The British government is increasingly convinced they can.

For decades, doctors have tried to persuade people to quit smoking,
exercise more and lose weight. But with mixed success on the
exhortation front and facing a rising obesity crisis, British officials are slowly abandoning the health argument and fattening peoples’ wallets instead.

The U.K. has tested several programs that pay people to make healthy
choices. Although the trials have been small, officials say they have
been successful enough to roll them out further. This week, the
government announced it will give out five million 50-pound (about $78)
vouchers to families that can be swapped for fruits and vegetables.

I think this is absolutely CRAZY!! I don’t want my tax dollars going to bribe lazy fat people to eat healthy.  It’s their choice to live UNHEALTHY..

I choose to eat healthy and workout and NOBODY has to reward me but myself. I don’t care what other people do with their lives unless it affects my life… SORRY FOLK!

There are lots of reasons to be healthy, like looking better and living longer and now maybe earning a bit of cash,” Haslam said. “But once you spend that cash, what happens to your motivation?”

I agree Haslam! There are more rewards to living a healthy lifestyle then getting a little bit of cash.. giving away prizes does not teach people how to eat healthy… its just a temporary fix were they will either starve them selves, develop some kind of eating disorder or stay motivated for a short period of time to gain a temporary reward..

“If you want to reduce obesity on a societal level, governments will have to make fundamental changes like altering food price systems to make healthy foods cheaper,” he said.

Britain also commissioned the Weight Wins Company to test whether paying people to slim down worked. In eastern and coastal Kent, experts found that 400 people in a 2008 trial lost an average of nearly 15 pounds and kept it off for at least one year.”

Did you read that guys!  Averages of 15 pounds were kept off for at least one year… what happened after that year?? They gained their weight back… To me that is money down the drain… they didn’t learn ANYTHING!! God forbid the government takes my money!!!

lol—so, you disagree then laura?

this does seem extreme, esp if the people aren’t keeping the weight off after a given amount of time.  even though money is a huge motivator, a person has to decide for themselves to change…it won’t stick otherwise.
