What is everyones thoughts on doing the Paleo Diet while working out? Good/bad? I have found that I stick to the “roots” of it anyway. Lots of meat, fruit, veggies and nuts. It’s my opinion that sticking to it about 85% strict is probably about the best way to tackle it from a performance standpoint. Because otherwise it could be hard to get enough carbs.

MY QUOTE
If I were to go on a strict diet, I would follow the Paleo Diet.
It eliminates dairy, wheat, processed foods, and other foods that may cause allergies, and gluten sensitivities
The Paleo Diet makes a lot of sense, these are the foods that we were meant to eat (following the cave man diet/lifestyle)… It eliminates most food allergies and I would love to see the difference in my energy levels, digestion, and overall body composition…
My QUOTE
I recently found out that I am slightly lactose. I eliminated cottage cheese from my diet for a week and I felt sooooooo much better. Less stomach discomfort and bloating!!
MY QUOTE
It would be tough…
I love my oat meal, sweet potatoes, peanut butter, and fage yogurt..
That is basically my entire meal plan!! It would be very hard but very interesting to see if there is any truth behind the true cave man diet! I also have high respects for Paleo and Charles-Poliquin
But is it a lifestyle diet?? I don’t think I would follow it for a long period of time.. You have to live alittle!!

It’s really not that hard to eat whole foods (fresh veggies, fish, meat, poultry, fruits, nuts ect).
I actually learned to appreciate fresh whole food more then processed garbage. I have a bigger passion for food because of it…
You learn to appreciate the freshness, quality, flavors, and textures of food.
It takes a little while for your body to against to eating whole foods but once you make that transition it is so easy to follow that path…
“There are two main goals for this diet – optimizing digestion, and improving overall health and longevity.”
I really believe there is truth to this statement. People who have tried this diet always say that they have more energy, less bloating and digestion issues, successful fat loss, lower cholesterol, better sleep and over all health.
Its makes sense! This diet eliminates all foods that may cause allergies, increase blood sugar, cholesterol, processed man made junk, dairy, grains ect.
I am not saying this diet is easy to follow however it is certainly worth a try if you are serious about your health.

Quote Max Aita
“I had lost 15 pounds of useful muscle and I felt weak as I watched my lifting totals drop. The problem I found was the amount of food, not the types. It wasn’t a big change to eat just meat and veggies, but since the goal was weight-loss, we were on pretty strict calorie restrictions. If not for some cheating, we would have won the challenge. “
I thought this was interesting because it made me wonder if this diet is good for someone that is trying to gain muscle and strength.
By reviewing the criteria’s of this diet i think its more suited for someone trying to lose weight, increase overall health, and cure specific food allergies

Key points I found interesting in the article
DIGESTION
Eating a diet that focuses on fat and protein consumption instead of carbohydrates, forces your body to utilize fat stores instead of running on glucose, which helps with building a lean, fat burning metabolism and saving glycogen stores.
Eating a diet based on fresh produce and meats maximizes the amount of nutrients and fiber, while keeping overall calories relatively low in comparison
LONGEVITY
Paleo proponents argue that our Paleolithic ancestors had a much better quality of life than we see today, particularly when it comes to longevity and health. They didn’t have as long of an average lifespan because they lived in a harsh environment without the medical advances we have today, but they lived relatively disease-free and demonstrated markedly better physical condition than the average person today

Lol, you guys bicker like brother and sister. It’s so cute ^_^
I just don’t like that the Paleo Diet has turned into the next Atkins diet, where companies are marketing things as “Paleo Friendly”, even if they are processed… isn’t that completely contradictory to the idea behind the Paleo Diet? It’s not just the ingredients, it’s the processing too. Just throwing a gluten free, or no trans fats tag on something doesn’t make it healthier, and now we’re seeing it happen with Paleo stuff too.

You are so right!! I have noticed that…
Can the creator of the paleo diet sue these companies?
I would assume the company promoting their “paleo” friendly food would needs permission to promote that…
I can see how it can confuse the general public… what a shame!!
Some people really try to make the effort to eat healthy.

Jared, the Paleo diet is fantastic for losing weight - it’s the diet that we evolved eating, and our bodies respond really well to it. any sedentary person should strongly consider using it, and many weekend warriors can also see amazing results on it.
that being said, it’s not a good diet for elite athletes, or anyone with activity levels even half of what you guys do in your training. some form of carbs is necessary to replenish glycogen, and provide the extra fuel that your muscles are going to need to do what you guys need to do, and those are definitely a no no in the Paleo Diet. it’s true that you can burn insane amounts of fat using the Paleo Diet, but it’s really hard to get stronger using it.
using some combination of Paleo principles, along with good workout nutrition and carbohydrate consumption, usually makes for a great approach. it’s kinda the “best of both worlds” where you can get really lean, but at the same time get enough carbs to fuel your activity levels and get stronger.

you can use fats for energy, and your body is plenty good at using fats for energy. fats are the primary source of energy during low intensity activities, such as sleep, and you can even increase that effect by using a ketogenic (fat based) diet.
however, when it comes to building strength and muscle, carbs are key. the glycogen in your muscles can only be replenished from carbs, and if you aren’t getting enough from your diet, your strength gains can be limited. you can create carbs through protein via gluconeogenesis, but that is a very complex biochemical pathway and doesn’t take priority in your body. if you want to keep your strength levels up and build muscle, carbs are the way to go.
not saying you have to pound the carbs, you can use carb cycling and specific workout based nutrition protocols, but they are pretty much a necessary macronutrient for these types of athletes.

Why cant you eat any grains, and breads? I understand that breads are processed but its ont even a bad processed food. whats wrong with eating breads, its healthy. right? It just seems to make no sense, it seems people are just putting everything into one category and makeing them look bad. bread is a healthy processed food, so why not eat it?
Whoa, this thread blew up! I Didn’t expect this, dang. I think it depends on the amount/variety of fruits/veggies you’re eating. I mean I eat kiwis, bananas, oranges, apples, and blueberries daily. That in addition to almonds, cashews, walnuts, and all the other kind of nuts. I mean I really don’t think that I am getting TOO few carbs in my diet. Who knows, I’m giving it a shot, we’ll see!

this is so un necessary, this diet is a scam. cheese, bread rice i mean come on people are you seruise? these foods are good for you if you eat the right amount, people on this diet just always have to take everything way to extreme. grow a pair.

Im with Jon. Train hard and your lose the weight. Im on that all you can eat diet. Its were i eat what i want when i want and it works great for me
JON… you guys have no right to be telling the average person who works out to follow your diet advice… You guys train at such an intense level that if average people ate what you eat they would definitely gain weight.
The paleo diet is pretty extreme however you have to take account that some people may have gluten allergies, peanut allergies, or lactose intolerance…. This is a great diet for someone who is super serious to lose weight and remain allergy or intolerance free, better digestion, reduce bloating ect…
I have every right, this is America. Everybody these days has a problem, an allergie, this, that, it just gets old, In my opinion its an excuse. My body cant do this becuase of this, thats all escuses. Back in the day 200 houndred years ago non of these problems ever excisted, now all of a sudden every body has ADD! now everybody is alergic to peanut butter! stop it!
We do train at a very intense level but the average person can do that. We train the olympic lifts and thats all. The average person has a choice to hit the weights. They can do cardio which non of us do. They can burn just as much calories as us if they wanted too.
Rob you bring up a great great point. I am cut as hell, I am riped out of my mind, and I eat anyhting I want. so why is this? I dont do any cardio, I havnt done an abb workout in three years. I do very low volume snatch cleans and squats, thats it. so how is this possible, do you really think that if I eat this scam diet called palio I would be in any better shape?
