Spices will add life to otherwise boring diet fare and provide a few health benefits to boot.

Cinnamon“Cinnamon extract has been proven to aid in glucose disposal, so it keeps your blood sugar stable. Don’t bother with a cinnamon extract supplement; just add cinnamon extract to your food for flavor and fat loss. You might also think outside the box with cinnamon it works great with a lot of foods you might not expect.”

Turmeric“This is often found in South Asian and Middle Eastern dishes and it is commonly used in many curries. The active component is curcumin, an antioxidant that has been found to aid joint health, helping to reduce inflammation and heal injured joints.”

Cayenne Pepper“If you like it hot, then this is the spice for you. A dash will give your food some kick and put your body in fat-burning mode. Capsaicin is the active ingredient in cayenne and it is a proven thermogenic. Cayenne causes a slight rise in body temperature, which means more calorie burning and fat loss not bad for something sitting in your spice rack.
If you aren’t a fan of the dry version, then grab some hot sauce and put a few drops on your chicken or steak.”

Look at you, such a foodie! I wish I could cook well, my food is always so boring. Does anyone know any good books that can teach how to really use spices effectively? I am really good with the nutrition side of foods, just not so good with the cooking aspect…

First off you should definitely taste all the spices and make sure you like them…

For example i don’t like Dill or Smokey paprika… You wont now unless you try!

Then you have to imagine how they would taste with a particular meal…

Chicken is so versatile so that is a great way to experiment with different spices…

Then you have to figure out what you want out of your dish

Sweet, fresh, spicy, smoky, bitter, nutty, minty, salty, buttery, garlic,

Or

Sweet and Smokey, spicy and fresh, sweet and sour ect.

They also have different garlic and lemon, all spice… blends to name a few…

I just try to in vision what they will taste like together

You also want to add different veggies, nuts, oils and condiments which will add to the flavor, texture and balance of your meal.

Haha or you could just buy cook books lol…

I like Giada’s cook book however (with my nutritional background) i sub different ingredients for healthier ones…

you’d be surprised how much you can learn from watching the food network, or reading recipes from magazines like Bon Appetit. try cooking those recipes, and once you get a good handle for the tastes, then oyu can try making changes and experimenting on your own. cooking is all about trial and error and trying new things… you never know when you’re going to accidentally stumble upon something amazing, but you also can’t do it unless you try.
