Did you guys hear about the study “Your Multi Vitamin My Be Killing You”

What were your thoughts??

could-increase-death-risk-study-finds?ocid=twitter

Jim Stoppani..

“This kind of stuff really irritates me. One study found a 2% increase risk of dying in those taking supplements. Another study reported that in women taking a multivitamin 40% died before the end of the study, but in those not taking a multi only 39% died.

There’s no real difference there in any of these studies. A 1% or 2% difference means nothing. But the mainstream media will tell you that you should never take supplements because they’ll kill you. Yeah, it wasn’t the high fructose corn syrup that any of these people had been guzzling for decades… it was those toxic vitamins! Give me a break!:

Why do people want to make studies just to get BAD press? This is ridiculous. I actually work at GNC and COULD NOT believe when a customer told me about this study. Absolutely unbelievable. It does the general public absolutely no good. How the H are vitamins and minerals going to hurt you? What is next? That water and food are bad for you? Child please.

READ BELLOW

Read Your Supplement Labels:

“Check for Vitamin A and Iron
Read all of your supplement labels and check for nutrients you are allergic to or that you are getting too much of. Avoiding nutrient deficiencies is essential, but some nutrients are toxic in large quantities, meaning if you get too much of things like vitamin A or iron, you may be making yourself unhealthy!

Check the supplements you’re already taking, and make it a habit to always read ingredients before starting a new product. Look for anything you might be allergic to or that you may already be consuming a lot of. Be aware of the amount of sugar you’re ingesting from protein and carbohydrate powders. Check for what kind of omega fatty acids are in your fish oil. You want to take omega-3s in a much larger quantity than omega-6s, and opt for more DHA than EHA. In fact, most people don’t need to take extra omega-6s because they are typically abundant in modern diets.

In the case of vitamin A, you only need a little bit daily, and deficiency in this vitamin is generally only a problem in malnourished individuals in developing countries. If you get too much, it can damage the liver and cause fatigue, depression, and illness. Also, excess vitamin A can hinder vitamin D’s beneficial effects, and taking too much A has been linked to bone toxicity and an increase in hip fractures.

Be aware that some foods such as carrots, sweet potatoes, and butternut squash (notice, all orange vegetables) contain large amounts of vitamin A. Some supplements, particularly multivitamins, are packed with vitamin A as well, meaning that if you just happen to take more than one supplement with extra A you could be overdosing.

Iron in high doses is another problem, and only specific populations need to get extra iron. Women of reproductive age, pregnant women, people with chronic diseases, and possibly vegetarians or people who donate blood regularly are at risk of low iron. The rest of us probably don’t need to take supplemental iron.”

agreed, these studies are pretty ridiculous.

the things that charles pointed out can certainly be avoided by taking the right type of multivitamin. if you aren’t a pregnant woman or older male, you shouldn’t be taking those types of multl’s. there are also specific types of multi’s for athletes with extra amounts of minerals such as magnesium and zinc, which are essential for athletic performance. and FWIW, i disagree with having to watch your multi if you are eating lots of vegetables. many vitamins and minerals that you absorb are excreted if you are consuming too many, and it takes grossly overdosing on those nutrients to see problems. when you give warnings like that, it simply reinforces things like that lame study that shows that taking multivitamins could lead to more deaths, when in fact you should be encouraging people to take multlvitamins and eat their veggies.

Very well said Pete. All multivitamins are NOT creatred equally. A lot of it depends on your age, and maybe your current diet. But - agreed 100% Pete.

HAHA so true. Although, I do have to admit that sometimes I hate taking multivitamins because if I am not super hydrated I pee really really yellow. OR, if you take any type of athlete training pak (super vitamins), such as ANIMAL PAK or SUPER VITAMIN PAK - you will pee really really yellow no matter what. So somtimes I do wonder how well you absorb the vitamins. And, the smell of those packs alone make me want to puke to be honest haha. I just can’t stand the smell. IDK what it is. But, overall multivitamins are GOOD!

if you are finding that your pee is super super yellow, that can mean one of many things:

1) the multi isn’t good and all of those vitamins and minerals are being excreted instead of absorbed, which basically means you are wasting your money. are the minerals chelated? chelated minerals are attached to comounds that help to ensure that they are going to be maximally absorbed. check out the label, cause you might want to consider spending the extra bucks on a multi with chelated minerals.

2) you are getting plenty of nutrients in the food you are eating, likely cause your diet is good. in this case, it isn’t gonna kill you to get the extra vitamins and minerals cause your body is getting everything it needs, so it is excreting the rest, but it could be a waste of money. multi’s are good insurance to make sure that you are getting the appropriate amounts of vitamins and minerals, but if you are getting sufficient amounts in your diet, you don’t really need the multi. this is definitely a possibility, but it depends on your diet and how locked down it is.

3) it could have nothing to do with your multi and could just mean that you are dehydrated and need to drink more water. the color of your urine is more a product of your water intake than any other factor, so you might just need to make sure that you are drinking water first thing when you get up to offset all the water you lost overnight via breathing out water vapor, or that you are getting enough in the late evening, the two typical times when most people take their multi’s.

4) it might just take some thinking outside the box, but don’t assume that your pee is yellow because of your multi and stop taking it. now the smell on the other hand can be a better indicator - if your pee smells like your multi, then it is likely the cause and you should probably get a better one. just like most things, you get what you pay for with multi’s, and some brands just aren’t absorbed well and are a waste of money.
