Ok…So, I have a weird question. Do you think it would be a good idea to get a blood glucose meter just for general performance type knowledge? YA know? I am trying to lower my bodyfat significantly, and, I am on a very low carb diet. Do you think it’d be a good idea to check my blood glucose levels at a couple different times per day? Maybe pre workout and/or post workout? Just to be able to really tell how many grams of carbs I should consume?

Interesting question...
That is definitely an interesting question. I mean, there are a lot of people who go on “zero carb” type of diets and do fine…Mainly because they consume more protein and fat. When you are at rest your body burns mostly fat. However, when you exercise obviously you burn mostly carbohydrates. I mean, I think it could be a decent idea for sure for performance reasons. Just to be able to monitor how much you need to raise your blood glucose before a workout, or, if you raised it too much. If you ate too big of a portion pre workout then enxt time you could cut the portion in half and see how your body responds. I actually think it is a pretty decent idea, alhough, maybe a bit over the top…
You can get the blood glucose readers anywhere I believe. All you do is poke your finger. I know a relative of mine has diabetes and can get insulin anywhere he wants. We were on vacation in another state once and he went to a pharmacy and got it (without proof that he was diabetic). It just doesn’t matter, anyone at any time can go and get insulin! I am pretty sure I have seen the readers at Wal-Mart too for pretty cheap.
True, it just seems over the top, but, if you are DEAD serious about your sport and performance it may be worth a shot.

Is it dangerous?? Insulin can KILL YOU!!!!!!!! IF you don’t take it right it can flat out kill you. What does insulin do? It basically regulates your blood glucose levels by taking the carbs and calories out of the bloodstream. So, if you take TOO much insulin and DONT EAT ENOUGH FOOD - it will continuje to pull and lower your blood sugar levels until you go into shock and would eventually die..This stuff is incredibly dangerous and should not be taken lightly, although many bodybuilders use it religiously.

How can pharmacies be allowed to sell this without prescription?
Also is it considered an illegal substance to take for bodybuilding competitions??
Also is it considered an illegal substance to take for bodybuilding competitions??
To my knowledge (and Jared can elaborate on this) there is no way to test for insulin…The tests can’t differentiate synthetic insulin from regular insulin I guess. As far as why it is legal - well, because there are TONS of diabetics in america. And, that number is growing at an alarming rate. There is a VERY small % of the population woh actually use it for muscle building reasons, and not enough to make it a hassle for all other diabetics by having to get a prescription, etc.
Thanks for informing us with that mike…
And regarding your comment about buying legal insulin… its true and VERY sad that it CAN be mainstream…
How can people let them selves get to that point… i just dont get it…
It’s their freakin life!
They are literally putting their lives at risk by not eating a proper diets and exercising.
So many people are scared to take business risks, go ski diving, bungee jumping ect because they are scared of the consequences then why don’t they take control of their health by making smart choices????
I just don’t understand their priorities
You are absolutely correct. It cannot be tested for, and, because of all the diabetics it is much easier (and smarter) to be sold over the counter. I mean, that is the biggest difference between bodybuilders back in the day (Arnold) and the bodybuilders of today…Now, they take insulin. That is how they are SOOO much more enormous right now.

It is the super drug for bodybuilders…Imagine if you could control EXACTLY when your body utilizes certain nutrients? What if you could throw darts like that? What if you said ok I want 10g creatine, 10g leucine, 50g protein, 50g complex carbs…NOW…Ok, done. Take some insulin and it will act as a vaccuum and suck it ALL up. I have NEVER taken it, nor will I ever, but, I studied it a lot in college for a paper. It truly is fascinating.

I really don’t now much about it// is it hard to regulate how much you take?? Is it really that >>dangerous if people with diabetes learn to regulate it then why cant bodybuilders do that… what is the difference??
Is it because body builders are using it for the wrong reasons and adding more then diabetics would (beyond homeostasis?)

Yes, the situation is completely different. The type of diabetes matters, too. Some are resistant to insulin and some jsut don’t produce any. The difference is that non-diabetics (bodybuilders) are taking insulin IN ADDITION to what their body is making. They are LOADING up on it, so, you need to LOAD up on a ton more calories to ensure it. I mean, it is like with anything….It can be done safely, but, a few bad apples ruin it for everyone in the bodybuilding world…Ya know? Some idiot takes it without knowing what it is and doesn’t eat afterwards…boom, shock. I am by NO means recommending it nor would I EVER recommend anyone take it.

Jared.. that makes alot of sense.. thanks for breaking it down.. it sounds really scary!.. so body builders can eat more to grow and not have it stored as fat???
i think that is crazy stupid to mess around with..

In a nutshell, yes. Basically, they inject the insulin, then, eat a ton of calories. So, the insulin sucks it up like a vaccuum. That way it gets pulled immediately into the celsl to be used for energy. That is essentially how they control when and how they take in their nutrients on a daily basis. people get extremely crazy about it and take more and more insulin as time goes on to try and gain more and more weight. Strongman competitors have also been infamous for doing this as they try to get to like 400lbs lol! Craziness!!

ewwwww.. i will say it agian jus scary!!!
do our bodies adapt to insulin??
Would these bodybuilders need high dosages????

Although I am not 100% sure, I wouldn’t believe that our bodies adapt to insulin (As long as you aren’t insulin resistant to begin with). I mean you might become more insulin resistant, but, I don’t think so. Like I said, I am not 100% sure.
It is mind boggling to me tha tthese guys take such EXTREME health risks! I mean, I understand wanting to be the best in the sport but to put your body through such stress and crazy hormonal fluctuations is crazy! I mean, their bodies have to be functioning so differently than ours in terms of how it metabolizes food. Their bodies will probably slowly become insulin resistant after mega dosing on it for so many years. That is the type of epople who are so narrow minded they will do ANYTHING to win. They are very dangerous to compete against…
do these guys live long??? i don understand how they can live a healthy life… everything they do is just not normal for there body… why woudl anyoe put thier lives a risk just to win a metal????
its just so extreme.. do they think they are untouchable adn nothing will happen to them?

you know, a lot of these guys have not been taking it long enough to see if they will live long (or short). The use of insulin (especially in crazy high dosages) really just began within the last 10 or so years. so there is not a ton of data on it currently. You would certainyl think the stress it would cause on their bodies would be extreme, and, thus, a shortened life span. however, it hasn’t been proven! so, we shall wait and see I guess.

wow that is a scary thought..
i wonder what will happen to ronnie coleman, jay cutler, dexter ect…
they take some serious stuff.. i am sure they have a doctor monitor them but it cant be healthy

I also wonder that all of the time! I mean, they lose a ton of weight instantly. Ronnie Coleman lost 100lbs within like 6 months of stopping professionally bodybuilding. How crazy is that?

100lb?? that is insane! he looks so different its weird.
I am sure he was not eating nearly as much and the lack of juice insulin, supplements, and growth hormones did not help much lol

Haha yeah he does. He is still huge, but, just sorta looks like another big meat head. not like the old Ronnie 100lbs heavier in theoffseason. Yep, a lot less of every single steroid I suppose and a lot less food! Man, I bet he feels like crap now. well, maybe he feels better weighing a lot less?
