You use it to make things like dressings and for sushi rice and stuff like that. It’s similar to white wine vinegar but has a different taste that blends well with soy sauce and makes for good pickles, etc.

i use a ton of the stuff you listed, but i also like to throw in other spices like:

- chili powder
- cumin
- nutmeg
- turmeric
- cinnamon
- saffron
- oregano
- basil
- parsley

not only do spices make your food taste way better, but many of them have anti-microbial effects, are high in anti-oxidants or do things like help imrpove circulation, insulin resistance and blood pressure.

You guys ever heard of / cook with coriander?  Looks like it has some great health benefits.  Saw this from Dr. Oz’s website…

Dr. Michael T Murray Answered:

Coriander seeds have a health-supporting reputation that is high on the list of the healing spices. The essential oils in the seed make it an effective carminative and digestive aid. In parts of Europe, coriander has traditionally been referred to as an antidiabetic plant. In parts of India, it has traditionally been used for its anti-inflammatory properties. Modern scientific investigations of coriander have focused on its antimicrobial properties, anti-anxiety action, and cholesterol-lowering effects. These preliminary studies in animals appear to confirm many of its historical uses. For example, its cholesterol-lowering action is the result of coriander stimulating the conversion of cholesterol to bile acids within the liver, an effect that would likely improve digestion of fat.

Dr. Dean Ornish Answered:

In my experience, coriander is a little like rap or hip-hop music - people either love it or they hate it. Coriander is especially rich in protective phytonutrients, as well as a good source of iron, magnesium, manganese, and fiber. It contains nine different antibiotics that help prevent the spread of food-borne illnesses such as salmonella.

Coriander

Coriander is the dried seed of the cilantro. The seeds are round like tiny balls. They are used whole or ground as a flavoring for food and as a seasoning. The seeds are used in curries, curry powder, pickles, sausages, soups, stews, and ratatouille. The essential seed oil is used in various herbal remedies and dietary supplements, and to flavor gin, vermouth, liqueurs, tobacco and perfumery

Spices will add life to otherwise boring diet fare and provide a few health benefits to boot.

Cinnamon“Cinnamon extract has been proven to aid in glucose disposal, so it keeps your blood sugar stable. Don’t bother with a cinnamon extract supplement; just add cinnamon extract to your food for flavor and fat loss. You might also think outside the box with cinnamon it works great with a lot of foods you might not expect.”

Turmeric“This is often found in South Asian and Middle Eastern dishes and it is commonly used in many curries. The active component is curcumin, an antioxidant that has been found to aid joint health, helping to reduce inflammation and heal injured joints.”

Cayenne Pepper“If you like it hot, then this is the spice for you. A dash will give your food some kick and put your body in fat-burning mode. Capsaicin is the active ingredient in cayenne and it is a proven thermogenic. Cayenne causes a slight rise in body temperature, which means more calorie burning and fat loss not bad for something sitting in your spice rack.
If you aren’t a fan of the dry version, then grab some hot sauce and put a few drops on your chicken or steak.”
