Not the way we train them hell when im done i pretty much crawl every where. On the real I do not no I do not believe our method would be benificial so in our case I would have to say no explosive yes faster in the lift for sure but faster if you mean running doubt it.
Picture three guys with legs the size of large trees racing in a 40 might be fun to watch but i would guess the 12.2 40 yrd dash (Lumber) would impress no one.

True…I think a lot of powerlifting squats and bodybuilding type squats won’t make you faster. What do you think about olympic style weightlifting squats? Where the main focus is on speed and power?

Hear at California strength we trained Jeff maehl, top reciver that played form Oregon, and we squated the crap out of him for over three months getting him ready for the NFL combine, he went and broke his 40 record like crazy, his vert, and broke the all time Combine shuttle record, so yes I think that Olympic weightlifting squats help with speed and power.

Oh wow. That is very interesting. So a guy at cal strength did a lot of olympic lifts + running and broke that record? Would you say the olympic lifts were most of his program? Or what was most of his training focus?

Majority of his training was the olympic lifts and squats. He also ran on a regular bases. Squats do help you get faster if you do them right. There is a link between squats and increasing your speed if you go below parrelell in the squat. Not at parellel but below parellel is the key to increasing your speed.

Oh really? Do you work with track athletes Rob? I remember reading somewhere that you were a throwing coach? How do you program the olympic lifts and the squats to help your lifters throw farther?

Yes I’m the throws coach at a local high school in the area. I based my entire workouts for my throwers on snatch, clean, and squat. I add in a couple other excerise too like bench press and push press. Some core and stuff but majority is based on the olympic lifts. It was my first year coach at this high school and my program showed to be effective. I built the best throws team they hav had for the past 15yrs. I had a girl break the school record in the shot. I had 2 other girls break into the top 10 for the school all time in both shot and disc. i had a guy break into the top 10 in school history in disc as well. I also had the girls league champion in shot. The boys jv league champion in disc. Had 4 of my throwers go to ncs meet of champions. Which was the most of any school from our league.

Oh wow. That is an incredible resume for a first year throws coach. That is phenomenal. Do you design all of their lifting workouts as well? Did you throw in high school then too?
