Show up warm-up and know that all the time I have committed to is about to be over. I came to compete and do the best I can. I can only do what I have prepared to do. Now do what I set out to do! When I finish there is nothing left to give!

music was always helpful for getting me psyched up before a game or match. i liked to slow things down and just sit there focusing on what was coming, visualizing and trying to limit distractions so i could mentally prepare for the competition. stretching and warming up and all those other things were always kind of a routine, but getting prepared mentally was always important for me.

I like your style Pete!! It’s all about focus and mentally preparing yourself!

You have to believe in yourself that you can go beyond your limits and don’t be scared to challenge yourself…

For proof… there were many times i went into the gym in a tired non motivated mood until something occurred were it got my adrenaline going… My mood and energy completely changed… IT WAS JUST ALL IN MY HEAD!

Preparing for competition occurs everytime I train. I don’t go to a competition and focus on my practice I focus during my practice about what I will feel that day. The excitement, the smell, the emotion, the sounds. The clearer your vision the more it comes reality.
Example …when I plan a Thanksgiving dinner I don’t just plan what we are having. I imagine who is there, where we will sit, conversations. You create an entire scene. The clearer the vision the closer it becomes a reality. This is a type of training I share with my kids all the time about competition. Imagine what is going on that day. The closer to that you can bring your vision the more focused you will be  at the actual event.

The link I added is a great talk about how we think. I also completed a course that no high school or college student should graduate without. All about our ability to create our own future and success in that future. There are many out there this is only one that I did and I share with all of my students at all levels to some degree.

I love this!!!

This is a great way to bring up your confidence and self belief.  If you envision it, it will motivate you to reach your goals and see possibilities!! This is a great way to go about life in general…
You will be that teacher your students will never forget… Believing in yourself is the most powerful tool you can have…

What do your students say when teach them this lesson?

Remember they are k-3rd grade….remembering they won’t but I try to plant the first seeds. My student teachers do take it with them and it is remarkable that no one has shared that with them in that 16-17 years of schooling. Like I said that info is good for anyone. It changed a great deal of my own direction and focus it the past few years. That’s why I really try to share it. I don’t want to waste it.

OMG OMG OMG!!! what a coincidence!!!
Charles Poliquin JUST wrote an article about….

READ IT!!

“Imagine Your Work Out Before You Train: Mental Imagery Improves Performance and Raises Confidence”

Use mental imagery and adhere to a pre-workout or competition routine to improve performance, raise confidence, and decrease anxiety. Research shows that using task-oriented coping, such as mental imagery, before working out or competing is an effective way to cope with anxiety and improve performance. Task-oriented preparation helps build confidence more than disengaging or distracting yourself from the competition or workout at hand. Even if you’re just doing your daily training session, visualizing the lifts, sprints, or drills in advance can improve your performance and build self-confidence.

A new study from the UK investigated the relationship between confidence levels and performance, and the role that different coping strategies influenced these factors. It’s probably no surprise that athletes with greater confidence perform better, but this study highlights the best strategies for developing confidence and performing at your best.

Avoid using a disengagement strategy, such as resigning yourself by mentally giving up, or accepting negative feelings. Resignation can take the form of surrendering your abilities or confidence to your opponent or to another influence such as being overweight—in this case you might avoid working out because you’re resigned to having an unhealthy body composition. An understandable response, but a better strategy is to develop a routine before working out or competing, and control your thoughts by imagining yourself performing the lifts or activities to come.
For optimal performance, avoid distractions as well. These take the form of focusing your attention on unrelated aspects of the task by thinking about other things, listening to music, reading or watching TV, for example.  Naturally, we probably all fall prey to distracting ourselves before and during workouts, but there’s extensive evidence that you’ll perform better by using visualization and paying attention to the cues your body gives you while exercising. This is particularly true in competition, but for best results you should always practice as you play.

Using mental imagery will not only improve performance, but there is evidence that it raises confidence, even in lower skilled athletes. The UK study showed that lesser skilled athletes tend to have lower confidence and use disengagement, particularly resignation strategies for coping, resulting in poorer performance. The answer is task orientation and imagery to focus on the task, improve performance, and ultimately raise confidence levels.

Research also shows that regardless of skill level, self-confidence tends to deteriorate as competition nears, making routine and mental focus all the more important in the immediate moments before a workout or competition. By using task-oriented coping strategies, you’ll be able to ease anxiety and have an overall better experience from your sport or training. This has been shown to promote goal attainment more effectively than disengagement, which is more likely to lead to lack of success. Using mental imagery will allow you to avoid getting caught up in high stress feelings, and help you perform better. You can create a positive cycle of greater confidence and even better performance!

Getting ready for a competition is an all day process for me. I always like waking up early during competition days regardless of what time i lift. Then i like listening to calm music. Im part hawaiian so usually a hawaiian reggae is what i listen too all the way up until i start to warm up. That way i dont waste any energy getting excited to soon. Then when i start warming up i listen to a couple motivational speeches from ray lewis and other people. Then i listen to pump up songs to keep my energy high.

What do I do? Absolutely nothing. I have psyched myself up for the months leading up to the conversation. All the work is done. All the stress is gone. All I need to do is perform my job to the best of my ability, whatever that is. My focus has been there for months already. I just collect my own thoughts and do what I do.

What is the weirdest way you guys have seen somebody psych themselves up before a competition??
-
I would have to say it is some wrestlers I have seen. I am a former wrestler myself, but, I see a lot of wrestlers smack themselves in the face repeatedly before a big match lol. It just seems silly. They also smack themselves all over their bodies repeatedly. Calves, quads, hamstrings, biceps, shoulders, hips, face, everything. I mean, just go roll around on a mat in the back room for a while and you will be warm! Do you think that by slapping yourself youa re getting warm? Is it for intimidation? Like look how hard I can smack myself - that shows you how TOUGH I am! Hahaha. I am a full fledged wrestler but some of those dudes are pure comedy.

I saw a guy doing a football warm up for about an hour before a 5k….the race is less than 30min. for most runners and for good ones under 20. Crazy…I am looking at him at first and just like what in the world are you doing but then again I am  like what ever. KOoky!!! Bodybuilding was the same guys pumping up for an hour and a half before the pre judge.
