Hi, I wondered if someone could analyze my routine and comment.Im 46 and started lifting weights about 2 years ago…but have been more serious during the last 6 months or so. I take whey protein and creatine and work best i can to the following schedule around work .I workout on Thursdays,Fridays saturdays and sundays, about 30 mins to an hour each day, obviously with short rests between lifting. I try never to exercise the same muscle part two consecutive days ie.. a days break between biceps.I have just started incorporating dead lifts into my program, but only have an ez bar for this. I rest monday, tuesday, wednesday because im busy with work on those days. I haven’t got much of an idea if im doing it right…the schedule that is and would welcome some advice. Barry

hey Barry, welcome!
it sounds like you are doing the best you can to get in your exercise around your work schedule, and that is perfectly ok. at least you make the effort to get into the gym on the days that you can. based on your quick description, it sounds like you are what we call a “weekend warrior”, the type of guy that isn’t necessarily training for anything specific but just trying to stay in shape and improve your health.
for weekend warriors, the most important thing is simply to move. to be completely honest, the program doesn’t matter nearly as much as the activity levels, and as long as you have the motivation to move, you’re doing fine.this is the biggest reason that people who do the P90x, or Crossfit, or Insanity, or any other cookie cutter program out there do see results. in most cases, it is simply that they started moving and started burning more calories and creating muscle because they were now exercising. if you do have a goal or something that you would like to accomplish, please post it so we can have a better idea of what to recommend.
doing body part splits with a day of rest in between is a very good strategy since it helps with recovery, but of course if you post your specific workouts, we can give more feedback. deadlifts are a great exercise and give a ton of bang for their buck, as do any of the big, compound movements like squats, dips and pull-ups. the more of these types of exercises you can use in your program the better.
if you find the time, post some more details and we’ll try to advise as best we can.

Tremendous advice Pete. I think you would be better served to maybe take saturday off just to make sure you have a rest in there as well. It will imrpove the quality and the intensity of your other workouts (mainly sunday). Overall I am glad you got started even though it was a late start! Better late than never. As far as your supplements go whey protein and creatine are great! Are you also taking a multivitamin to amek sure you are covering all of your bases there? Do you have any sort of joint pain?
