Spying on people in the gym!!

Lately I have been paying attention to peoples form while they are training.

A few things that I am noticing:

1. They do not complete the full range of motion (they only complete half of the range).  They use a weight that is too heavy for them which does not allow them to properly contract and extend their muscles.

Examples. Shoulder press, bench press, squats, leg press, pull ups lateral raises ect.

What a waste of an exercise!

2. I also notice people swinging to get the weight up by compensating with other muscle groups to complete the exercise.

I saw a girl curling 25 lb dumbbells.  It looked like she was only working out her lower back rather then her biceps… It was like a god dam seesaw lol..

I feel bad for people that have no clue about form.  It’s kind of embarrassing.  I guess that is why many people are intimidated to weight train and lift heavy.  I would highly recommend hiring training when you first start.

This is so common that you wonder if people just learn that way by watching others! Ha
Its funny to me when I train new people and I tell them that the first things they need to do are learn the proper technique their reaction is dissapointment as if learning technique is somehow holding them back. Its so sad to see SO many people risking injury and limiting themselves in the long run by doing things wrong.
What do you think is the most common exercise which gets done improperly in the gym?
I would think curls or squatting.

I would say squats, bicep curls, dead lifts, straight leg dead lifts, and surprisingly lat pull downs are common exercise executed poorly

I see this all the time too and every once in a while I will stop someone and show them the right way to do the exercise and explain why what they are doing is bad. Sometimes people get really upset when I try to help them and tell me to f off or that they know what they are doing, which kinda cracks me up, but you could spend all day in a 24 hour fitness fixing form and giving tips. It’s a shame their trainers don’t do that even though they are paid to be there. Not that I’d really trust too many of the 24 hour trainers I’ve seen anyways.

i hate when you try to help someone in the gym and they throw it back in your face, it makes me want to punch them in the face! i am taking time which i could put towards lifting 3x what you are doing to help you and you act like a douchecake and shrug it off.
“when i give a dog a bone, i don’t want it to tell me how it tastes”

Dude you got it some people dont even want friendly advice. I ran into that alot when I was training at multiple clubs. You also have the GUru that knows everything and does nothing that is close to correct. As I’ve said before no one knows everthing and everyone can improve but some people just are not willing to learn. Just smile when they begin the ache’s and pains of poor technique.

I agree Jon north; I sometimes go out of my way to help people with form. However I am choosy when it comes to helping people.  I usually help people that look totally lost, embarrassed, or staring at my form/exercise pretty much begging for some help lol. (It’s sometimes creepy)

I also help people that I am friendly with and share new ideas with “REAL” fitness enthusiasts.    I would never approach someone that is thick headed and cocky, this usually includes old timers going through midlife crisis and trying to get back into the body building seen, stuck up b*tchy women, teenage boys, or people which have personal trainers…

The funny things is when I show them how to do the correct form, the next time I see them doing that exercise its like my instructions went through one ear and out the other lol…..

I guess they are trying to take the easy way out by not using correct form.

Example: Swinging their body for momentum, compensating other muscle groups to complete the movement, not completing the full range of motion, breathing properly or keeping their core tight.

Some people are just plain old lazy and do not realize they can get more bang for their buck in a short amount of time doing correct form..

i had a great partner from the beginning and i wasn’t intimidated by starting super light and using a full range of motion.  It’s paid off for me.  Takes time to get bigger and stronger but  over time I think you’ll get stronger faster then trying to be able to keep up with the strong people in the gym when you first start training.
