What are your top 5 back exercises?
1. One arm dumbell rows
2. Deadlifts
3. Pull-ups
4. Reverse Flyes
5. Face pulls
for size and mass, one arm rows and deadlifts are my go-to exercises. pullups are the quintessential back exercise and i use a bunch of variations, and i really like face pulls as a finisher cause they get the rhomboids which are hard to get with other back exercises.

Rob, you forgot military press and jerks…
deadlifts destroy your upper back, which has to bear the brunt of the weight while you pull up with your posterior chain. you aren’t necessarily pulling with your back like you do with a row, so much as supporting the weight. think of it as similar to what your core muscles do on a squat, holding everything in place while the action takes place elsewhere. but the isometric action of holding that big a load (i’m assuming you are putting a decent amount of weight on the bar if you are bothering to do deadlifts) with your upper back really works those muscles and helps pack on a ton of mass.

wow that is crazy
How can a dead lift be compared to a row??
so basically people should just dead lift everytime they workout back?

I would not recomend people just deadlift every time they work back… I am not big on frequent deadlifting. But, one way you can compare a deadlift to a row is that they both work the hell out of your lats. I thnk the most sore my lats have ever been is after a few sets of romanian deadlifts when I did them for the first time having stopped doing them for several months.

That makes sense..
I am scared to go heavy low reps with deadlifts..
I pick a weight were i can do 12 reps.. I dont feel confident to go heavier… I am scared of hurting my lower back.

Personally, I would be more scared of the high reps… easy to let your back go loose for a split second when you have it in your hands for 10+ reps… IMO much easier to lock down and stay locked down when you only have to do 2 or 3, no matter what the weight.
what if you are doing a really light weight, do you still have to make the weight touch the floor?
Do you have to put all the weight on the floor or can you keep tension in your body holding most of the weight??
Someone asked me this question and i was curious to know …

I am not a big fan of light or high rep deadlifts, if your gonna go light do stiff legged deadlifts or ev en better RDL’s. dont really have to rest the bar on the flooor on either, on RDL’s for most people it wont even touch.

I dont touch the floor with RDLs..
But i still want to know if its considered “wrong” to not touch the floor when dead lifting ( with lighter weight) ..
Whether you are a fan or not.. is it wrong??

I think that by definition, a clean is from the floor to lockout, if you dont want to touch the floor call it something else.
