Why do you want to take CLAs? What are your goals?

And how do you supplement CLAs? Are they a pill or do you get them in shakes?

I wanted a supplement to aid in fat loss. I have 3 more weeks for my wedding dress fitting.

I know it can help speed metabolism, and insulin sensitivity.

Its in a gel cap form from trader joes..

CLAs are good, and that’s actually one of the reasons that eating red meat (from good sources) is a good thing, not the devil like it has been made out to be over the last 50-70 years.

the research on CLAs is very inconsistent, and it’s not definitive one way or the other whether or not they do everything people claim they do. for every study that shows something, you can find another one saying that it doesn’t show that effect.

that said, it certainly wouldn’t hurt, but i wouldn’t expect supplementing some CLA over the next 2-3 weeks to take you down 2 wedding dress sizes either. as part of a comprehensive diet and exercise regimen it may help give a little extra boost, but i wouldn’t expect it to do a whole lot in that short amount of time.

Thanks Pete… that makes sense…

I will clean up my weekend cheats a little more and increase my cardio based circuits /hiit.

I think the CLA’s will help aid in my goals but i don’t expect miracles from ANY legal supplement!! I know what i need to do and there is no magic pill… I am not stressing over it.. its only 4-5lb..

Thanks for the info…

What other supplements would you recommend… green tea??

Some research suggests that its a synergistic action between the EGCG and caffeine in green tea. I actually usually recommend that people drink actual green tea instead of taking an extract form of it. Who knows if they are taking the right things out of green tea in the extract (although it should say if there is RGCG on the label), and we don’t know for sure whether or not you need the caffeine to get the thermogenic effects. Just try to drink a few cups of green tea (I usually make a huge mug of it i the afternoon instead of coffee).

yeah, it’s not definitive and the results in studies are pretty moderate, but every little bit can help, especially if you are doing the right things with diet and exercise.

a couple other things you should try to eat more of are peppers, and the spices cinnamon and turmeric. all have research showing that they can help impart thermogenic effects and possibly contribute to weight loss efforts.

I will definitely try those suggestions… I do add ALOT of cinnamon in my protein pancakes… Does heating the spices diminish the effects??

When you say peppers, do you mean HOT peppers or just regular peppers?

Gymclass… I will start drinking more green tea… I just don’t want my teeth to get yellow lol…

ooh LA LA! Charles poliquin just posted this.. its a sign!!! i must drink green tea!!jk

Green tea has been recommended as a means of nutritional support for those susceptible to Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, which is the reduction of brain function associated with certain diseases.

Recent research from England and Scotland not only supports the use of green tea to protect brain cells but also indicates that the benefits of green tea are improved by digestion. In research led by Dr. Ed Okello of Newcastle University in the United Kingdom and published in the peer-reviewed journal Phytomedicine, green tea contains polyphenols, which are chemicals found in plants that may act as antioxidants.

During digestion the polyphenols bind with the toxic chemicals amyloid beta and hydrogen peroxide, which are present in high levels in those with Alzheimer’s. As such, you could take the motto “You are what you eat” one step further with green tea by saying, “You are what you eat and also what you digest!”

There have been a ton of studies done showing benefits for green tea for a lot of different illnesses. That’s why it’s considered one of the best health foods. I actually think that the amount of tea that Japanese people drink has more to do with their longevity and relative health (before Western diets) than soy ever did. ^_^

heating spices shouldn’t diminish the effects of the compounds.the food compounds you have to worry about being diminished by cooking are viatmins, but in this case it isn’t any vitamin based compound you are looking to get benefits from in the spices so it isn’t an issue.

i did mean hot peppers, as hot as you can tolerate anyways, but any type of pepper will have capsaicin, the compound you are looking for. green or red bell peppers (organic!) will be perfectly fine.

and if you’re really worried about staining your teeth, chew some of that whitening cinnamon gum from trident after your tea (or coffee). cinnmon flavored gum is the only type of gum that has compounds to kill odor causing bacteria, as opposed to just tasting good and maybe masking bad breath like other flavors.

What HOT peppers do you recommend (that are tolerable)…

Last year i tried these cute little pepper… i took a big bite and i was DIEING!!

I chewed like 8 sticks of gum, drank water, ate lemon, sugar… anything you name it… I don’t remember the name but looks can be deceiving… it lasted all day!! Even the next morning when i rubbed my eyes they stung! It was horrible

you should’ve drunk milk.

as for hot peppers, it doesn’t sound like you can tolerate a whole lot, but cayenne and habanero are two of the more common ones. basically any type of chili pepper, but the smaller and more pointed a pepper is, the hotter it is. just like you are doing with cinnamon, try adding ground cayenne pepper or red chili flakes to any foods you can - on pizza, in scrambles, etc.

I thought only the hot peppers had capsaicin in them, while the sweet peppers like bell/box peppers were pretty much normal vegetables?

ooh, yeah you’re right. it’s only the hot ones that have capsaicin in them. laura, those little peppers don’t look too bad but those are the kind you want to eat. if those are too hot try to find some bigger ones, maybe serrano chilis or poblanos (some great mexican food dishes you can make with these).
