New Study: Whey and creatine increase muscle fiber growth

In yet another exciting finding revealed at the 2003 Experimental Biology Meeting, cosponsored by the American Physiological Society, researchers at Victoria University in Australia have demonstrated that a 100% whey isolate formula and the popular athletic supplement creatine produce an increase in muscle fiber growth greater that correlated with greater strength gains.

The same researchers had conducted earlier experiments that revealed an increase in muscle force and mitochondrial energy production in rats and improve muscle mass and strength in bodybuilders when either supplement was consumed.

In the current double-blind study, the researchers, led by Professor Mick Carey and Dr Alan Hayes from Victoria University’s Centre for Rehabilitation,

Exercise and Sport Science, supplemented thirty-three male bodybuilders with 1.5 grams per kilogram body weight with the following daily regimens:

-creatine plus carbohydrate,
-whey isolate,
-creatine and whey,
-or carbohydrate alone.

The investigators took biopsies of the muscle fibers of the subjects before and following an eleven week period of thrice weekly resistance training, and found an increase in the cross sectional area of fast-twitch muscle fibers in men who consumed creatine and/or whey compared to the men who received the supplement consisting of carbohydrate.

Fast twitch muscle fibers are those that grow in response to weight training and are responsible for maximal force production.

Subjects who received both whey and creatine experienced a greater increase in fast twitch muscle fiber size than those who received whey alone. Additionally, a significant correlation between strength gains and increase in muscle type fiber was observed in the participants.

While all groups gained in strength and lean mass after eleven weeks, the groups receiving creatine and/or whey experienced a greater increase than the carbohydrate only group.

Whey is a protein that naturally occurs in cow’s milk. In addition to aiding bodybuilders and other athletes, whey may prove to be helpful to older individuals or others who experience muscle wasting conditions.

great study results, this is exactly why you need at the very minimum a good whey protein shake post workout, but this is just another study that shows the benefits of creatine.

i’d be interested to see them do regression analysis and see if the gains in muscle fiber were due to increased work capacity due to recovery time from the shakes and creatine, or whether it was only due to the supplements. basically i’d like to see if the guys in the group taking whey and creatine were able to lift more and that resulted in more muscle fiber growth.

Yes it does seem that the bodybuilding community was right on this one. I can remember back in the 90’s when people were starting to use whey and creatine.

Now many researchers in many labs have shown it to be an effective strategy not only for short term increases in muscle strength and size, but longer term growth especially when it comes to whey and its high BCAA content (leucine in particular). A recent paper looked at chronic increases in protein synthesis in response to about a 16-20 gram dosage of whey protein over several months and there was no diminishing of the anabolic response.

Cool stuff!

Who should be taking creatine?

If someone has a goal for fat loss would taking creatine benefit them?  I have heard that creatine makes people bloated and retain water, that is why I have always been hesitant to take it…

What are your thoughts?

Yes I have “heard” that it makes people bloated, but have never actually seen any data to support it. Creatine won’t necessarily help with fat loss per se, but if someone (such as yourself) is interested in increasing strength, even mildly (an extra couple of push-ups, or some more weight on the bar for your lifts) than creatine will help.

Especially if the person doesn’t eat much meat, as creatine is found naturally in meat tissue. So vegetarians/vegans see the best results, but in general most people will see at least a 10% gain from taking creatine.

In my opinion a strong women is all the more sexy, so I encourage it!

Thanks Matt!

I have a friend who is competing in a figure show sometime in September.  She is new to training and dieting however she is genetically gifted!!

Her trainer is making her take creatine and arginine.. What are your thoughts about this???

Isn’t leucine and glutamine better amino acids???

She is trying to build a little more muscle. As she gets closer to her show she will start cutting.. (She does not have much fat to lose)

 Genetically gifted definetly helps!
I think the creatine would be a nice addition in a simple 5 grams per day. The arginine in my opinion is not a great additon. For the BCAA/aminos, the leucine would be nice too. However she can get this from a high quality whey product (as long as she takes 15-20 grams at a time of whey) or in separate crystalline form if she prefers she would need about 4 grams or so of Leucine (if I am remembering correctly).
Other than that beta-alanine is coming on the scene as a good product to help with workouts.
Is she on the forum somewhere? It is always great to see genetically gifted athletes!

I agree with you glenn..  She is not on the forums but her comp. is on september 11th.. I will post some of her pictures.

She is getting really great result, especially for her first competition.

She stopped takingcreatine about 1-2 months ago.  She is supplementing with arginine, protein powder, and pre workout drinks.  I will find out more info for specifics
