Arginine Prevents Fat Gain

According to Toronto-based nutritionist Kristine Hughes, Arginine may have fat-loss potential! A recent study showed that Arginine prevented fat gain and led to greater increases in lean muscle mass in rats that were obese. During the 12-week study, obese rats were fed a high fat diet or low fat diet. The researchers found that Arginine supplementation decreased the rat’s bodyfat 65% for the group who consumed a low fat diet and 63% for the group who consumed a high fat diet

“This metabolic change is likely beneficial because elevated concentrations of branched-chain amino acids may lead to insulin resistance in obesity. Additionally, Arginine can stimulate muscle protein synthesis, a biochemical process that requires large amounts of energy … dietary energy would be utilized for lean tissue rather than fat gain. According to the researchers that conducted the study.

I would like to know from the study the quantity of arginine taken per unit of body weight and the average percent bodyfat for the rats at the start and the end of the diets.  Did the low fat diet and the high fat diet have the same total calories?  If so the arginine supplement only has a 2% effect.  Once these questions are answered, I can determine the cost- benefit of adding arginine as a supplement. At this point a 2% effect would require a very low cost or not worth the expenditure given my current bodyfat percent of 7.4%.

Those are great questions RandomLuck, I’d also like to see if there was a control group!

I’d heard of some of the overall benefits of Arginine as a BCAA but hadn’t ever heard anything like this. It’d be interesting to see it tested with humans as well since animal studies don’t always translate to humans.

What is L-Arginine?

L-arginine is an amino acid that has numerous functions in the body.
It helps the body get rid of ammonia (a waste product), is used to make compounds in the body such creatine, L-glutamate, and L-proline, and can be converted to glucose and glycogen if needed.

L-arginine is used to make the nitric oxide, a compound in the body that relaxes blood vessels. Preliminary studies have found that L-arginine may help with conditions that improve when blood vessels are relaxed (called vasodilation), such as atherosclerosis, erectile dysfunction, and intermittent claudication.

L-arginine is also involved in protein formation. In larger amounts, L-arginine stimulates the release of hormones growth hormone and prolactin

That is the most common use for L-Arginine ——-LIBIDO! It can, and will, increase your libido naturally. Obviously there are stronger products, but, naturally this can help increase circulation (After all it is NITRIC OXIDE). That is what NO Xplode, NO Shotgun, NaNO Vapor, and all of those other Pre-Workouts have in their name. NO stands for ?Nitric Oxide. Nitric Oxide = Arginine!

They DO! Tha tis the #1 thing I Have ever seen it promoted for. You walk into GNC and you ask for “natural” ways to increase libido and the #1 thing they will recommend is Arginine. It’s main function is to give you a PUMP and increase it does that by increasing circulation…So - if you want to increase libido increased circulation will do that!!!!!!

HAha!!! I was like oh boy she has to know what I am saying here. Yep, yep. crickets. Haha nah just kdiding. I have taken arginine for over 5 years straight and would never really even consider not taking it.
-
One tip I have for others is to take antioxidants with it. Some grape seed extract or reservatrol can really help the uptake of the arginine as it clears free radicals out and can enhance the pump.
