i’ve heard Natural Calm (a fizzy drink for evenings before bed) is great as a magnesium supplement. magnesium has a sedative effect for many people so it’s actually good to take before bed. i’ve been meaning to try this myself and am going to look for it next time i go to the store.

What compounds are on the back of the label?
It’s not uncommon to see calcium and magnesium packaged together since they work together in the body to fortify your bones, and zinc deficiency is actually quite common as well.

I am confused about this product because they say calcium interferes with zinc absorption..

Why would they make a supplement with calcium, magnesium and zinc?

I think i am going to return this supplement from trader joes.. I was trying to find a zma product..

what are your thoughts.. why would they add calcium which will give the reverse effect

actually that is pretty strange, but supplement companies do a lot of strange things and that isn’t really Trader Joe’s forte perse.they might be trying to include a bunch of things in one to play off the important roles of both magnesium and zinc, and then they are throwing calcium in there with the magnesium because you need to take both for bone strength/density. just a guess.

the mechanism by which calcium blocks zinc isn’t necessarily antagonistic. they use the same transport mechanism, but because calcium is considered a more necessary nutrient it gets preferential treatment. i’m thinking if the dosages of both minerals are small enough, and the transport mechanism can handle that amount of both nutrients, there won’t be any blocking. it’s hard to tell and probably varies a great amount between each person.

i wouldn’t necessarily say you need to return the supplement, but you could probably find better. Biotest has a ZMA supplement and i’ve always trusted their stuff.

calcium and magnesium are huge for bone strength and density, and if you work out as often as you say you do you are probably depleting your zinc and magnesium stores pretty well.
zinc and magnesium are important for a number of things, but for people who work out a ton the most important functions are anabolic. having proper amounts of zinc and magnesium increases free testosterone and IGF-1 for muscle growth and recovery.
if you are taking the right amounts and the calcium isn’t interfering with the zinc absorption, you should see better recovery and more growth from your training. you might also feel stronger due to better bone density, and long term you will be far less at risk for osteoperosis.
