the supplements you listed all have various effects to help build and maintain muscle, but if you are looking to buik up it’s all about calories. the common thing you’ll see with the buiking supplements on the market is that they have a ton of calories, usually 500-600 easy per serving, and a ton of carbohydrate. packing 2-3 of these babies into your daily routine helps to give you an additional 1000-1500 calories per day in a liquid form, which is the easiest way to add weight.

True… it’s mainly about getting more clean calories in…

However these supplements aid in bulking, help with recovery, give you more energy (pre workout), and help replenish muscles faster…

actually i wouldn’t really call any of the supps listed “bulking” supplements. like i said, the majority of the bulking supps on the market are super calorie dense shakes. they are used to squeeze additional meals in and as workout supplements. all of the supps listed have other affects but i wouldn’t really call them bulk supps.

well, are you talking about putting on a lot of weight in a short amount of time (bulking), or are you talking about just building muscle mass? we have an article for simple strength and muscle building:

http://www.muscledog.com/article/view/130/THE_SUPPLEMENT_SYMPOSIUM_PART_THREE

bulking is a totally different beast

I think bulking really had to do more with your food intake, also on the other hand, when your slimming down, does anyone know if fat burners work?

builking is adding a ton of weight in a fairly short amount of time. usually when guys bulk, they put on a ton of muscle and fat, because thats the nature of the beast. you don’t care what you look like or feel like, you just want to see those numbers on the scale, be big and eat your brains out. usually it’s after you hit your goal that you start working to lean out and get rid of that fat.

adding muscle is a much finer process, and what you do in the weightroom is gonna play a bigger role, but you don’t need to eat your brains out to add lean muscle mass. you do need additional calories, but it’s not on the same scale as bulking.

and blake, i wouldn’t really recommend using “fat burners”. if you need to burn more fat, try working in more cardio. many of the fat burners on the market are full of crap suplements and caffeine, and they can really jack you up if you don’t take them properly. what kind of fat loss problem are you having?

I agree with Pete… stay away from the fat burners… Your body will develop dependence to it and could slow your metabolism down. They are full of CRAP!

Add some cardio to your routine, clean up your diet, drink/supplement with green tea, fish oil and CLA’s…

I promise if you clean up your diet, the weight will melt off.

ps.. I know you still go into the cookie jar so don’t lie!

A great supplement that I Have found to help me with bulking is Cytogainer by Cytosport. It doesn’t have an insane amount of calories but it definitely has more than your simple protein shake.

Any weight gainer you see is going to have a ton of carbs that aren’t the greatest/best. But, if you are looking to bulk you generally are wanting to gain as much weight as possible as quickly as possible. WHen I took that stuff I Stayed very lean but gained about 5lbs per month for over a year straight. Some people look too hard at certain stuff like that. Just eat a lot of calories, and, the Cytogainer shakes helped me do that.

I also wanted to include one other supplement that really sin’t that well known or used for weight gain… It is HMB. I hardly ever hear it recommended for weight gain, but, I figure if it helps mainly in PROTEIN SYNTHESIS and HELPS YOU RECOVER…How can that NOT help you gain weight? It might not be a ton of weight, but, I mean if it is a few extra pounds of muscle a year it certainly has to be worth it, right? I know Optimum Nutrition carries a great product for pretty cheap as well.

While I agree with a lot of the points being made here, I feel that I quality diet needs to be addressed first. A lot of people are lways trying to address what supplements to take to build muscle and what not but YOU NEED TO EAT! If you are eating, a balanced amount of high quality proteins, a mix of simple and compelx carbs and good fats, that will help better than anything. Once your diet is in check then go after supplements. For me I liek to keep supplements simple so my wallet doesn’t go empty. I take protein/weight gainer and creatine for “bulking”.

That is GREAT advice. I hope this is alwaya assumed when we give supplement advice. You shouldn’t even bother taking supplements until all of your diet is COMPLETELY in check. If your diet is not in check, don’t even think about taking tons of supplements. It is the base of the pyramid!

Mike.. this was a powerful statement and sooo true.. i love how you put it..

“It is the base of the pyramid”

it really is the last thing you should focusing on and confusing yourself with… if you are not serious about  your diet and training then you are not seriously about reaching your goal.. put these in check first.. then make take the next set but using aids (supplements) to further improve your goals..

Never leave out a multivitamin, either…They are so cheap, yet, can help you utilize all of the nutrients you take in and help your body function normally. That, and it can ensure your muscles are contracting properly, recovering, and GROWING!

Steroids! haha kidding kidding. Just kidding, I would never recommend that. I say taking 2-3 LEAN protein shakes a day is a great way to start bulking. By lean I mean like 70-80& of the calories from the shake being protein. 30g or so per shake.
